Question Propylene glycol dosage for pygmy goat

I've only been able to find a recommended dosage for ketosis in full-size goats. The dosages I've found range from 2 to 6 ounces for the first two days, split into two or more dosages. Would it be safe to halve that dosage range for a smallish pygmy goat (probably no more than 50 lbs)?

I got called to help a friend's husband deliver babies while she was out of town. Turned out the vet diagnosed pregnancy toxemia last week, and the only treatment given was Nutri-drench 3x per day. The babies evidently died in the last 24 hours, so we delivered two dead babies. Mom has been more or less off-feed for about a week and a half.

From what I've read, propylene glycol should be the treatment of choice. I know NutriDrench has that as it's first ingredient, but it seems like straight propylene glycol may be the way to go at this point. Just not sure how much to use for a pygmy.

It's basically just sugar, so dosage isn't all that critical

I'm a little embarrassed to admit - I don't know how much an "average full size goat" weighs! _______ ??

Because sugars aren't particularly good for rumen function, I kind of do worry about the amount I give. But then I tend to over-worry about a lot of things.

My smallest full size goat weighs 100 lbs. My biggest probably tops 150.

It is non-toxic when ingested even in reasonably large amounts. So it would be almost difficult to overdose. It is changed to lactic acid in the body. (then eventually to CO2 and water)

However propylene glycol is not a sugar in any way but actually a dual alcohol. Many of the glycols are sweet tasting. Its cousin, ethylene glycol (one less carbon group), is sweet tasting... and poisoness, and is commonly used in "permanent" antifreeze. Propylene glycol can also be used for antifreeze, which is why the toxicity is sometimes confused.

Halving the dosage would be fine.

I only have enough nutritional knowledge to be dangerous or cause myself unnecessary worry. I appreciate the info, o&itw! I knew it wasn't exactly the same as antifreeze, but I was concerned about off-balancing the rumen. I've been a slow learner in small ruminants, goats in particular.

I just know a bit about chemistry...... it's all these other people on here that have the goat knowledge!

The doe is improving! Yes! She told me this is the first time in 25 years of breeding goats that she has run into ketosis.
Pony likes this.

So very glad your girl is improving!

In future, you may want to keep CMPK on hand.
