Using Gonadorelin to bring goat into heat?

I have a boerX goat that the previous owner said had never bred, even though she had full exposure to a buck. Last fall we had her in with a buck for several months and we never saw her go into heat and she obviously never delivered. Tried again this spring with a different buck and same thing, no obvious romancing.

A friend just brought me Fertagyl (Gonadorelin) that he has used for his cattle when needed for cystic ovaries to get them to settle. Sounds like it may do the same thing as PG600.

Any thoughts on using this on a goat? If she doesn't catch this year, she's going to market.

Dunno much about gonadorelin. Does it cause ovulation or is it to treat cystic ovaries? Problem with it would probably be giving it at the right time in the heat cycle for it to be effective - too early and she won't release eggs, they aren't mature enough. I would insert a CIDR for 14 days, pull CIDR and give PG600 or whatever drug you said, then put her with the buck for 4-5 days. Blood test in 30 days and cull if open. You could also try luting, then lute again at least 10 days later (I'd probably do 14), along with a shot of PG600. Should bring her into a heat. I'd leave her with the buck for 4-5 days.

Preg check is cheaper (6.50) than keeping her for 4-5 months to see if she kids...

I used GnRH (same thing ) on Beauty this winter as she was hand bred 2-3 times and cycled again so i gave her a shot of GnRH as soon as she showed heat and then bred her 4-6 hrs later. This did get a positive preg test 3 wks later but she sure looks open now and is due 6/5. I asked the AI tech at the 2500 cow dairy I manage the office at and he said that was good advice and correct for live breeding but a bit different than AI. We have boxes and boxes of fertagyl and lute at work.

Are boers seasonal? If so I'd wait till natural breeding time and then use lute to make her cycle and then GnRH once in heat and let buck breed her 4-8 hrs later.

Once Beauty's delivery date passes I'm going to give order a natural breeding supplement per from Fir Meadow and see if that helps her.

I have used Cystorelin like dbarjacres said which is a GnRH, to get a doe with cystic ovaries bred.

Thanks gals! What dosage should I give? It's 43 ug's (microgram?)/ml, guessing she's 125#'s. I have never seen obvious signs of heat, just a little different behavior now and then.

My vet had me give the full cow dose. I don't remember if that was 2 or 3 cc's and she is about 75 lbs.
Ford Zoo likes this.
