Coccidiosis prevention and dewormer for kids

What do you use for coccidiosis prevention in your kids? How much and how often for how long? Also what dewormer do you use? Do you give it to all kids or do a fecal exam first? How much and how often?

Alice, That one dose every 3 weeks until weaning: how do you determine how many cc's in the dose? Thanks!

not Alice (but we do useing Baycox and love the results)..
the dose is determined by lbs.. in kids.. we use a dosage of 1cc per 5.5lbs (we actually bring the kids in and weigh them, don't trust the weight tape) shake the bottle well, just syringe it in.. they don't mind the taste like they do with the di-methox.. the small bottle of Baycox (toltrazuril) seems expensive, but I've already saved at least $50 this season using the Baycox instead of the Di-Methox..

Susie,

I understand that the Baycox runs about $50.00/bottle (and no idea the size of the bottle).

So how are you saving money? We do 1cc/10 lbs orally for prevention at 3 weeks and 6 weeks. If we are having a particularly wet spring, we will treat again at 9 weeks. Oh, and this is for 3 days in a row.

Thanks!

back when I was using di-methox40...it ran me 22 to 25 a bottle...by this time of year ..we would normally be on our second bottle...we have only used a 1/2 a bottle of baycox so far...guess the savings has been closer to 30 ....but...even if it was costing more...once instead of five days in a row...make it well.worth it....also..we have yet to have ANY gut issues with any of the kids from this year...usually on the di-methox...we would still on ocassion has a poopy rear once in a while.

this is a prime area of the country for cocci issues, so we have to stay on top of it

Does this "Baycox" require a vet's prescription or can it be purchased a local stores?

You can order baycox at the link above, or I was able to get my vet to buy me some cheaper than the online price.

The other advantage is the one dose rather than several days in a row (every three weeks still.)

I dosed the kids once at 4 weeks of age this year with baycox. I'm in love. You can add it to milk and they won't refuse to drink the milk like they do with baycox. The dose is 1cc per 5.5 lbs, and it comes in a 200ml bottle. With one dose, I'm saving TONS on prevention.

I crunched the numbers (math, ew!) in another post about a year ago. I even crunched the numbers as if I was dosing every 3 weeks, like you do with dimethox - and baycox was cheaper. Not to mention easier, and probably more effective, too!

I raise dam raised boer goats, and I'm not home 5 out of 7 days in the week. My father is not going to catch wild boer kids for 3 more days to syringe nasty tasting stuff down their throats - every 3 weeks. No way.

Here's the thread where I crunched numbers.

Baycox for coccidia?

Because I dose once at 4 weeks old, I'm REALLY saving with baycox. EASY! love it.
