Orange kidded - triplets!

With absolutely no warning, Orange has had triplets! Pics in a bit.

First one was on the ground when I went to check on Orange after lunch. VERY few contractions. Pulled second, head first. Pulled third, back hooves first.

More info coming.

She is definitely feeling better. Humming and licking the kids, but not making much colostrum. The kids are going to a new home to be bottle babies tomorrow, so I milked out what colostrum Orange had, fed it, then thawed some of what I had in the freezer. Thank goodness in the freezer that did NOT fail last year.

Keeping up with the calcium supplement and extra carbs for a while to make sure she is getting enough to support her road back to health.

Heading back out with more colostrum now.

From left to right,
#2 buckling, Alpine ears
#3 doeling, LaMancha ears
#1 buckling, Alpine ears

I bred Orange to a MiniMancha buck, hoping for just one little kid. Got three instead, and I was worried that she was going to waste away before she kidded. She only ate a couple of slices of apple this morning, even though I went out every hour with a different offering. NO signs of labor at all. Then BOOM! Kid on the ground.

I talked with Yarrow after the birthing was over, and she thinks these older does just can't do active contractions any more.

Orange is now officially retired. She can be the grumpy old herd queen as long as she wants.

Orange's kids went to their new home today. After a little confusion earlier in the day, they were ready for their bottles by tonight's feeding.

The family bought three older kids from me earlier this spring, and now these three. I am REALLY glad.

They also have a folder with three pages of instructions in English and Spanish. It was fascinating to work on the translations. I speak/read a little Spanish, but it is improving. Thank goodness for Google translation!

I got her from Emily years ago. Her official name is Bright and Beautiful Orange Ice. If I remember correctly, there was another Orange in that herd that she was named after. She was originally registered to Emily's sister, Rachel.

Orange has daughters in my herd. Lemon is a Mini-Alpine. Aster and Lily are Alpine/Saanen crosses. Bella (FF this year) is a full blood registered Alpine.

Orange produced nice bucklings that went to other herds as sires.

Orange in her youth.
