Why is this goat yelling all the time!

Ever since she kidded, Dawn has been yelling, blatting, screeching, etc. She NEVER made a sound before she kidded, just a cute little "mmmmmm" without opening her mouth.

Am I feeding her enough? Free choice hay, cup and a half of grain, 2 cups alfalfa pellets, water, yet she acts like she is starving to death all the time. She stands up and yells constantly now.

Or is this normal? lol

That's what my Vinnie did too...even when her boys were with her. I could understand it when they were separated, but not when they were together. However, the boys left Friday. She crabbed for a bit Friday night, but has been quiet ever since.

I hope she quiets down for you soon. Noisy animals trigger some response in me that is painful! I always interpret it as meaning that they need something, so I feel bad when they are noisy.

I have a FF Alpine who did the same thing. Totally quiet before, then spent the first month hollering at her kids. Where are you? What are you doing? Get off that playscape! Come over here! I'm going out to browse!!!

I have one that was like that. Quiet and aloof before kidding. Now it's, "Moooooooooooooom, what are you doing in the garden?" "Mooooooooooooom, the wind is blowing," "Moooooooooooooom, moooooooooooom, mooooooooooom, Hi!"

Hahah. I was thinking "must be a stinkin' nubian" when I saw the post title.

She's probably just mixed up. She knows she's supposed to interact with something - a lot. Her urges tell her to holler when she looses 'something', maybe she has no idea what she's supposed to do so just hollers all the time. Is she being a good mother or did you pull her kids?

I free choice feed hay. As for grain, if you want them to produce good amout of milk, expect to feed about 1lb grain for every 3lbs milk produced per day. Up or down depending on the animal. This can mean a couple pounds per feeding depending on the doe. My dairy does are pokey eaters so we just free feed their grain while they're in the milkroom and call it good. Otherwise, they have free access to hay and pasture. Unfortunately hay is cruddy now that we're at the tail end of what was baled last year's cruddy season, and the pastures are just starting to come in.

I call it the "Cling-ons". Some yell and look for 'something', kids or me or just 'something' for 2-4 weeks after kidding. They get over it.

Oh, man. I have one of those screamers. She is worse when she has kids but they are on her. She just likes to yell. She will start about an hour before feeding time. Unless she sees me then she will start from then until I feed. It's not just a regular maa. She is loud and can produce a very looonnnggg maaaaaaAAAAAAAAA.

I will be keeping this year's daughter and selling the screamer either this fall or in the spring. Her daughter takes after her father and is much quieter. Her son takes after her. If he doesn't chill out, he will be leaving too.

It drives me batty!

Good luck. I hope she chills out.

I bet she thinks you are her baby as well . You are being a naughty baby because you keep leaving the pen, bad baby! Seriously though I am sure she will calm down soon, some of my does are VERY hormonal and VERY vocal for a few days sometimes even a week after kidding. When hormone levels start dropping they start getting quieter, but it sure is annoying until they do.

Try and keep your sanity!

BWAHAHAHAHA ROTFLOL

Oh, that was great! I ASSUMED it must be Nubian also!

BUT IT'S NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

I have 2 Nubian does. Cecelia is normally quiet and actually has a soft voice.
Annie Goat is often loud and has a very bold voice. She is still morning her loss, but it is getting better.

It's tough being Mama!

There must be a Nubian in the woodpile somewhere

I have Nubians and it seems to be the younger does who are more vocal and worried about where their kids are. Also, I have determined that goats can only count to 2. I think its related to only having 2 teats. If they have 3 babies, as long as they know where at least 2 of them are, they are happy.

Ha ha! Maybe the problem is when they only have one. They keep counting to two? Lol.

We had a NUBIAN that did the same thing. Perfectly silent, until she kidded.

Guess what? It's not only goats. We also had several katahdin sheep that did it also. We always end up selling them, because the brain-dead hollering (even when their baby was standing right next to them), drove us insane. And it did not stop "soon enough"!

Honestly, we are always very truthful when they ask "why are you selling her?". In every case, both goats and sheep, the new owner has said, "Oh, we are used to it. We have one (or several, in the goat case) just like her!". I've always felt like a loser. Why can't we tolerate the hollering when others seem to have no problem with it?

I love this thread, lol! Now I don't feel so all alone....

Maybe she's trying to tell you she wants to try out for one of those youTube videos with the goats screaming in various pop songs?

We had all doe trips that ALL did this when they kidded. They all kidded within a few days of eachother, and so we had three screaming does out there. We had pulled the kids and they quit within a couple weeks. They were Nubians, by the way.
