Wanting Goats, would like some Advice!

Hello all. I'm new to the forum. I am a college student, living at home, studying Conservation Law Enforcement.

My boyfriend (of 3 years on April 25th) have a little over 30 checkens, and 4 ducks at his house. And I will be starting a garden at my house and his also. We have wanted to get some goats. Mainly for pets but also milk, if we needed it.

What kind would you suggest? I'd say we'd start out with 2-3. I told him that I'd at least want 1 pygmy goat because they are my favorite haha.

Thanks!

My advice would be this: Read, read, read, read, read, read. And then read some more. Also, ask lots of questions about what you are reading on a board like this. There is such a wealth of information here to be had and wonderful people who enjoy sharing.

You are going to want to check your fencing and make sure it's up to snuff. Learn about a good diet for them, contrary to popular belief (as most truth is) goats cannot eat just anything. Many common landscaping plants are toxic to them. And they will devour your rose bushes... I've never had to prune a rose bush since I got goats!

They are a joy to have but just study and learn about them a bit before you take the plunge. You will never actually be ready... but the best knowledge is empirical.
