New goat milking problem

Okay so we just got new goats, pygmies, and one of the girls just had her kids weaned but she's still in milk. She hasn't been milked in years and freaks out when we try.., should I wrangle her and milk her anyways so she doesn't get mastitis or just hope she won't get it and let her dry out?

You will have to milk her or she will be in a great deal of pain and will likely get mastitis. Rodeo if you must. She'll likely settle down after a while.

If you want the milk, yep, you'll have to round her up. It won't take her long to figure out you are not trying to hurt her. I try to remember how I'd feel if someone just starting grabbing my ....I'd not be very happy either

How long had the kids been on her? If they were allowed to wean naturally, slowly tapering off their consumption, she ought to be fine. If they were pulled, you probably ought to brave the crazy goat. Hobble her if you must. At least she's a pygmy if you've got to wrestle her!

You can buy a leather & chain hobble that has a lead that attaches under the milking stand or just tie a couple soft leads between her hooves and knees on the back legs, then tie to the legs of the milking stand giving her little room to kick. Make sure you use slip knots just in case.

Getting something is better than nothing. If you want her to dry up for some reason, just take a little to soften up her bag so her production will slow down.

Funny thing is that by the time you finally get her used to being milked she will have dried up enough, and then by next year she will have forgotten and then you will get to do it all over again ...

Get a curb chain from the feed store. It's the part of the horse's bridle that attaches to each end of the bit with a leather strap and buckle and goes under the chin of the horse.

Makes perfect goat hobbles. Goat hobbles go ABOVE the hocks. Snug.
