OT - Be careful out there!

DW found out last night late that one of her two first cousins passed away in a tragic backyard accident. She lived alone, and according to police she was apparently filling her backyard goldfish pond, slipped and hit her head on a rock, and drowned. A neighbor noticed water running down to the curb, went to check and found her. She had been there for hours.

Her sister and DW's Mom were here for the weekend when we all found out. Everybody's still stunned at the news.

Please be careful when doing those routine chores! And if you are alone, have someone check up occasionally. It only takes a moment...

I have a koi pond surrounded by rock and I think about that happening when no one else is home. Always be careful when working around the house.

very sad, I'm sorry.

I worry about that stuff too, it'd be hours before anyone even realized I was missing too. I do carry a cell phone now anytime I go out when no ones' home. I know it might not do me any good if I were passed out, but if I was injured, I could at least call for help. its a simple thing to grab it every day, and just a tiny measure of comfort.

I live alone on 5 acres and wear a whistle around my neck because that sound tends to carry more than a voice in my experience. I'm thinking about adding a dog whistle to the lanyard because whenever I blow it for my dog (which I would stop doing if I was to use it for emergencies), my neighbor's beagles start barking and run to the fence. That way he could know to check on me. Of course if I am unconscious, the whistle would do no good.
