Goat barn question

DW and I have been planning a new goat/hay barn, and yesterday made a good score on a LOT of used barn tin, cheap. More than enough to cover a 20x30 barn, maybe bigger. My question is whether tin alone will be ok for the sides (of course there will be the framework to attach the tin)? Since this is used tin, there are nail holes from its original use on a poultry house, so would the holes need to be tarred on the walls, or will it matter?

Our barn is metal so I'm sure it will be fine for the goats. Depends on your weather but I'm not sure how much rain, etc. will go through those little holes from the previous screws. Just have to wait & see. If you think when it's done the holes need to be covered I'd use caulk I think.
Good score on all the free materials, that will be great for your hay & goats.

I hate tin in this area because of the noise it makes during storms! That being said, I did use it when I initially started constructing my barn; so the south "shed-type" part is roofed with tin.

If you decide to fill the holes, do not do so with something that will harm the goats' rumen because, inevitably, they will find it.

if you have enough, you can just double layer it, and if you leave an air space between the layers, it will act as insulation, which reduces the noise. It doesn't rain here enough to cause our girls problems.

It wasn't free but came to about $1 a sheet, less when counting the used field fencing, 6" steel pipe, plastic guttering, two water trough float valves, cattle panels, and couple of other things they threw in just to get rid of them. It came from the nicest family, who started having health issues and wasn't going to use the stuff any more.

I like the idea of doubling up on it. If there's enough, I might do that.

You may find if your construction is similar the structure the tin came off of(i.e. 18" on center studs, etc.) you may be reusing the holes to attach. I've done this before and can usually plan it out so there are a minimum of new holes. You might want to attach a "chair rail" of sorts a little below goat shoulder height, because they will rub. And could cut themselves and/or tear up the tin when they do.

We use metal/tin roof on our outbuildings. As long as you secure it well, there's no rattling noise.

If you don't secure it well, you will either find yourself correcting the problem in the weather, or you will make it a point to get out there as soon as the weather clears. It's REALLY noisy!

We use the tubes of silicone in the caulking gun to fill in the holes. Works great.

Congrats on the score, and happy building!

WOW you did get a nice assortment.

I second the opinion to place a railing horizontally on the inside to protect the goats as they will be rubbing on it from tme to time.
