Cryptorchid kid
Runty's baby has one testicle that keeps retracting up out of reach whenever I try to band the little guy. He's 3 1/2 weeks old. Neutering him can wait a bit, but I really, really, really, do not want him breeding his grand dam or his three month old aunt.
(I am reasonably convinced that Nigerian kids can impregnate each other while still within the womb. He's already trying to hump my cats ... which I really need to get on video. He needs to be done. I do not need any more breeding disasters, thanks.)
I'll check, and it's present and accounted for, and I'll go get the bander, and flip him over to band him, and it disappears. As soon as he tenses up, and everything retracts, I can't get it into the sack to band him.
Not a problem I've had to deal with before. Anyone want to speculate on the odds that the nut will permanently descend within the next few months?

We had Nigerians for years & I know goats are horny little buggers I never had a buckling breed any females before I got them weaned & out of the does' pen.
Your probably safe for a while yet & hopefully both testicles will fall down. When I band I have hubby hold them standing on a table with their feet on it & I band with the little buck in an upright position.

I never band mine till they are weaned that way the Urethra gets time to grow and you wont have problems as much with UC. I have never had a baby that young breed anything they are just basically practicing and playing. Nigerians are fertile young but not that young mostly around 8 weeks or so.

I would try doing it while he is standing up like Backfourty said. That is how my vet did my little Pony

Umm, my mini-togg was able to do much of the job at 7 weeks so he was banded. He was peeing all over the place and mounting his sister and mother.
I have my hubby hold, I place the band, while still on the pliers, over the testicles while making sure I have two, if not I feel around and get the second one down and then work the band off the pliers, watching out for teats and not getting the band too close to the body.

Thats a little dicey
I had a lamancha with the same problem and I decided to wait. Mean while his testicle got really angry and I ended up paying for a hernia sx.
When the testicle is stuck up in there it does nothing but swell and get angry. I woulds give it a little bit of time but not too much time.

He's not really cryptorchid if it comes out when he's upright Yep, try banding him while he's upright. My daughter had an inguinal hernia that would slide back in when she was on her back and I have heard many human boys testicles can slide back up out of sight when they're still small boys.. Those areas just haven't closed off yet to prevent them going back in.

He WILL be capable of impregnating at 8 weeks. I have had triplets born on Christmas morning to prove that. We breed for March thru May and remove bucklings at 8 weeks. Do the math! I am nervous about keeping them in with does a day past 8 weeks.

My doe kids mount each other too...it's play. You can try to band him while he's standing, or put the bander around the testicles and use your other hand to push down around the testicle to make it pop back in. I'd wait a while though...try him again around 8 weeks.

He is not a crypto. I had one last year, set of quads- three girls, one boy. I told him his sisters must have castrated him in utero Neither of his ever came down. It felt like an empty sac, surgery would have been really expensive. I sold him for $50 with full disclosure and told them he might end up peeing on himself and will probably never be fertile.
I castrate like everyone else, someone holds them in standing position, I am on the business end with the bander.
If someone gives him a treat and keeps him occupied it might stay down long enough for you to pop it in. I would wait a couple of weeks and see if it stays down. Band before 8 weeks and you should be fine. If he starts unsheating it then try to get it done that week. Once they start taking it out they try to use it

In a bit older kids, they usually are more 'dropped', where younger kids have sneakier testes, haha.
I usually flip them on their backs on my lap, and place a band. I usually don't have help doing anything that I do.
One time I placed a band and was holding the buckling in the manner I banded him. He was just staring at my face, so I kissed him on his nose - and he attempted to bite my face. Not that I blamed him in the least.

Thanks, guys. I've banded dozens of kids, but I've never had this issue before.
I usually do them at 8 weeks or older, but I'm being paranoid this year. This line of Nigies seems to be unusually precocious even for Nigerians, and I've had too many oops breedings. No more!
They've done studies in cats and dogs regarding how the age of neutering affects the width of the urethra. No proof has ever been found that the age of neutering has any effect on urinary tract development. That's why I decided I'd neuter this guy a little early. I really DO NOT want to deal with kidding this fall when I move to Payson.
