Separating weaned kids once mama is gone?

Needing opinions: Currently we have 15 does and 5 single kids (almost 8 weeks old) in a pen together. Soon, we will be selling three of the mothering does, keeping their 3 kids. Even though all the does are good with the kids, and one even lets them steal a drink from her now and then, I'm thinking it will be best to put the orphaned/weaned kids in their own pen for safety. Hubby thinks since they all get along so well we can just keep those 3 in with the does and remaining kids. I appreciate any thoughts from more experienced folks!

*If* it were more convenient for me (feeding-wise & management-wise), I would certainly be comfortable putting the kids in a different pen. However, there is that whole thing about them learning to live within the flock or herd, and learning herd dynamics. Either way, I don't see anything wrong with what you're thinking of doing.

Ditto on what works for you.

Right now, I'm thinking of moving out dry yearlings, wethers, and any does not due to kid very soon from the does/kids group. Feeding time is CHAOS.

I know what you mean by that! After this year, I decided we MUST try to have the does due about the same time, will make management so much easier! But then again, maybe it will just be too much work at one time. Maybe I'll get it all figured out in about 20 years!

Right now, there are nine kids in the pen. Two sets of triplets, a set of twins, and a bottle kid.

The others are scrambling for each feeder as I put out breakfast and supper to see if THIS scoop is different from the LAST scoop. :P

One LaMancha who is just grumpy anyway is leaving at the end of the month. She got bumped out of herd queen status, and she resents it terribly.

The wether has the WORST behavior. He is lovable, but stupid about getting in the way and knocking things over. I have him as a companion to his sister, who was born late last spring and won't be bred till next fall. If I move them to another location, life would be calmer.
