Exclamation Paloma Has Scours

My darling yearling doe who I have fed every day of her life since she was three days old came down with scours this morning.... Green, watery poo..... And frequently! I've given her Kaelin (???) Pectin (the kaopectate for animals....), ProBios, activated charcoal..... let her eat the long grasses she seemed to want.... Washed her hiney a dozen times..... Took her temp cause she felt warm to me (103.3), so I gave her 1cc of Exceed sub-q.

She acts normal, eats, drinks, gives goat kisses (I think she senses I'm worried about something).... Tonight her poo is the consistency of runny crepe batter. She poos infrequently, and only a little bit now, but I was hoping for more substance by this evening....

Please say a prayer, light a candle, send energy.... Whatever you do to help when someone needs it... I simply can not lose this goat.

Thank You!

Could she have over indulged in the grain or gotten a new food? Did she have cocci prevention as a kid?
Give her more of the Kaolin pectin. How much did she get the first time? I repeat the dose every time they have a loose bowel movement for the rest of the day. Keep her on just hay until the runny poop ends then slowly reintroduce grain. Also some yogurt will help re-establish gut flora. Plain no sugar added, small amounts at a time.
You're in my thoughts tonight.

Thank you! I did not know to feed only hay until after I fed her evening grain/feed. She is not bloated, but she did start burping afterwards. I gave her more charcoal, and some baking soda in Pedialyte. Her last poo was thicker, like pancake batter.

Yesterday she had 10 TBS of animal kaopectate. That seemed like a lot to me.... I did not want constipation to be my next problem, so I didn't give her more. I will give her more when the sun comes up. Is there a limit as to how much is too much?

Sorry I don't know how much on the pectin, but I feel your pain on the worry. One of mine pigged out on pokeweed. And she didn't stop when it messed up her belly, either! You probably don't have to worry about things getting green all of a sudden like I do, either.

Hay is kind of like crackers for us when we have problems. Dry and bland is good I keep a feeder attached to the stall wall with baking soda and they eat it as needed. Good luck and I hope Paloma feels much better today!

Can I ask why your giving her Charcoal(activated I am assuming)? Charcoal usually is given for poisoning & it does take the poison's or bad toxins from their system but it will also take the good stuff from them too.

If you don't suspect poisoning stop the charcoal. Probably for a full size goat 30 to 40 cc of Kaolin Pectolin at a time would be fine.

Did this goat get Coccidosis prevention as a baby?

Also some folks have had good lusck with canned pumpkin helping with diarrhea.

Carol, I had one do the same thing last year! I hate pokeweed and there doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of it, it is all over my property. Grows like trees in the summer. Ugh.

I hope Paloma is feeling better! I find when mine get the green runnies, it is usually because they found something to overindulge in. We use kaolin pectate and plain yogurt and restrict the diet to hay only until it is cleared up. If I am worried about dehydration from the runs, sometimes I add electrolytes too. I hope Paloma's is that simple to fix, too.

I wouldn't be doing charcoal either, it won't fix anything in this situation. Sometimes we can over do the medicines and make things worse. 30-40CCs of kaolin pectin are not a problem at all. Constipation is pretty easy to fix and a lot more rare but diareah is a problem that we need to fix. Keep doing the Kaolin Pectin until the diareah is gone. I would do the pumpkin but at this point her belly is pretty upset so I would wait to do it until things calm down.

Oh my gosh I needed to laugh today! You ROCK Oat Bucket!

Thank you everyone, for your advice, and for sharing your experiences.... I know I'm not alone in this, it just tends to feel that way sometimes.... Which is ridiculous because of all the wonderful people here, my goat mentor, and real time friends.....

To answer questions, she was not treated for coccidiosis as a baby. I fed charcoal because it was suggested by my mentor. It's fed seperately, not close to the time of feeding or other treatments., but I do understand it may absorb good stuff too..... I'll talk to my mentor about it again this morning.

Friends (who have no goats) have mentioned that it was hard for them when their children were sick, and I remember feeling bad for them when my children were sick, but my children were never so sick I thought they might die. For some reason, this is my immediate fear both times one of my goats were sick. I am an emotional train wreck until they are better.... Can anyone relate to this?

Is it possible goats not only make us addicted to them, but they make us MENTAL too?

Seeing that she was never given cocci treatment as a kid I would take a stool sample into the vet to rule some things out. My vet charges $25. I don't bring them in just a stool sample.

(((((RemoteAlaska))))) I'm so sorry for your loss. I can imagine.... I have recently imagined.... and my heart goes out to you.

The situation with my goat is baffling... Everything indicates she ate something that made her go sideways.... but my goats live in an extremely controlled environment. Literally nothing grows in their pen, or close enough to their pen for them to eat it. All their food is locked up out of reach, except for some hay they can reach through the chain link, but I free feed alfalfa, so that should not be a problem. I walk my goats on leashes so they browse with me right there. There is nothing poisonous or harmful on the property. They train, and have free time in an arena where nothing grows. Once a week I throw limited amounts of the brush and branches from the property into their pen. I frequently give them organic fruits and veggies, but they've not had any in over a week now. I am clicker training them, so they get peanuts in the shell, about a dozen per day, but I dig through the peanut bin at the feed store (much to the amusement of the feed store employees) to find the little singles, and check them for mold and discoloration. And yet all her symptoms indicate it was something she ate....

She is better today! Her fever broke right after I gave her the Exceed. She has not pooped at all today... or if she has, there are no runs on her hiney or legs. She never lost her attitude, and this morning she was head butting the Queen, so she seems to be feeling okay. I gave her a dose of ProBios and another of electrolyte paste.

So Kris, what else do you bring them besides a stool sample?

That's it I just bring in a stool sample and they check for worms and cocci. It's relatively cheap and I have a definitive answer within the hour of what we have and how bad is it.
