ok what the heck??!!

My mother had bought some goat cheese from the store, said on the packaging it was pure goat cheese. I am sorry but I tried eating some 1 it smelled funny 2 it had a bitter after taste 3 it left a stink on my hands that almost smelled like vomit...
Is goat cheese suppose to be like that?
I am a cheese lover and have eaten almost every kind of cheese out there but if this is what goat cheese is suppose to be like I do NOT like it! How can this stuff sell?? And is this what people are basing their opinions on? God after scrubbing my hands I can still smell that stink

NO! That is not what it should taste like. My mother and I bought some chevre from the store and honestly, it was the most awful thing I ever tasted. It tasted like I imagine licking the beard of a buck in full rut would taste and I could not get the aftertase out of my mouth forever.

Then I came on here and asked the very same question you are asking and the resounding answer was no. We haven't made chevre yet, but I can't wait to.

Store bought chevre often has a little bit of goat taste, but that sounds like it was BAD.

that doesn't sound right. maybe it was old? I had some store chevre that had honey of all things, and it was wonderful. still like mine best tho. but think about it, is a packaged cookie as good as your own homemade? not usually, so why would cheese be any different?

That description is not related to any goat cheese that I make.

Your own homemade cheese will taste totally different than anything in the store. I recently made my first Chevre and I will never buy cream cheese again. I even made a cheesecake and it was heavenly.

Hmm I love chèvre. Yes it tastes like a buck smells but with tang. I could eat it by the pound which it why I have to make myself because it's too expensive buy.

There's a farm near Fryeburg in Maine that makes the BEST soft herbed goat cheese I've ever had in my life. Me- the stuff I've made tastes like what you've described. I make killer cow's milk cheese, but my goat cheese leaves a LOT to be desired. I think I'm too easily distracted.

I recall reading that during shipment of goats' milk-like from the farm to the dairy, the sloshing causes something to break down, changing the taste (don't remember if it was lipase or what).

I have found that homemade cheeses or those that are made on the farm where the goats were milked has a wonderful taste, while other cheeses taste just like you describe.

The goat cheese I have bought at the store tasted like buck pee. Yuck....but my friend, who coincidentally has no bucks on her farm, made me cheese and it was fantastic. No bucky taste at all. Reminded me of buffalo mozz.

You do KNOW it is not permitted to brag about how heavenly anything you made tastes, unless you post the recipe, don't you?
