For expert pre-labor hooha judges
Alright,
I'll admit it. I'm desperate. I've lost all my gusto for this, and I just want it to happen. Last night, Heidi, friend and Ruby's previous owner surprised me with a kid barrel. Ya know the kind with the light and what not. Very, very sweet of her. Kinda took the fear of frozen kids away... a little. She was shocked to see Ruby as big as she is. Said her udder is WAY bigger than years previous. I was just sure last night was the night... but... nope..... So here it is. Her hooha. Please note the last picture. I was trying to clean off her udder and ran across some... goob. Please tell me that could possibly be mucous plug goob.
Thanks ya'll.

Grab the electric shaver (your hubby's mustache trimmer will work in a pinch) and shave that udder, around her tail, down her back legs. You'll be glad you did (soon) as you won't be cleaning birthing gunk out of her hair.
When she starts digging nests, it will be soon.

Do you see the goob? I've been thinking about shaving her... but won't she get really cold where the hair is now? I know, I know. I'm a real baby about these things.

She and the babies will be fine in this weather as long as they're dry and fed. Shaved udders really do help and make it a ton less messy. She will not notice - what little hair is there is not doing much. I just shave the hair short on the back legs.
I wish I would've done that with my doe who had quads on 3/2. She is still a mess, just didn't get around to shaving her. *sigh*
And yes, the goo could be plug. But some does loose that up to a week pre-kidding. Mine usually tend to lose theirs a few days before to do the day of kidding. Mostly I don't notice it at all.

I wish she'd hurry up & have those babies too Hannah! It does look like she's close though & although it's frustrating you just gotta keep an eye on her.
Shaving her udder & around the back end does really help. I hope to get my girl done this year.

When the hoo-goo is long and stringy, you will know the time is near.
If you can get her shaved, you will be much happier. Trub went a week earlier than we thought she would, and I didn't get her shaved, and she's slinging bloody mucus all over her back/sides. Dis-gross-ting. AND it's too darned cold to even bucket bath her.
She will kid eventually. It's kind of like humans: none of us are pregnant forever, even though it may seem like that.

Yep, get her shaved. She will be fine. It's gonna be warm this week. Get some olive oil cooking spray. After she is shaved, before she kids or after, spray her back there. Makes the crusty clean up SOOOO MUCH EASIER. lol

My first year milking I did not shave or trim and while I was milking one of my does she flung her tail and a big gob of bloody mucous nastiness flew off and landed right on my cheek!! My son was standing there chatting with me and just about puked!! It was GROSS!! I shave now..learned my lesson!

I read somewhere that if you see labor and didn't shave, spray their back end down with Pam and it helps cleanup. Can't say I've ever tried it.

Yes shave. Our girls weren't shaved before they kidded. It was one of the first things we did after we got them home. Much nicer to do it beforehand. After is just yucky.
