Talking Goat Preparedness Practice

I was heading out to check on my girls. My herd queen is due on the 10th, so I also go out to just monitor changes. As I'm heading out, I see my other two girls (the talkative ones) just hanging out around the fence line--being quiet! Then I hear from the barn, "MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

My initial instinct is, "Oh crud, I missed signs of kidding this morning, and she's gone into labor!" I try my best to run in the gross mud that's out there, without busting my rump. I get into the barn to find my quiet herd queen screaming her head off. In labor? Nope. She had pulled and picked through the hay I had in their feeder, left a nice pile of it on the floor, and was yelling to let me know it didn't pass inspection and she needed a refill.

On the bright side, I can count part of that little run towards my cardio requirement for the day, right?

Gotta love the Goat Stress test! I swear they conspire to come up with ways to freak us out, then laugh as soon as we leave!

ROFL You create quite a picture with those words as I can actually see you running thru mud only to find out you were running toward a "spoiled" brat! ROFL Thank you so much, IGG, for sharing it.

Let me share a little true story too. It was the very first year I had goats. I had 3 registered does (no buck): a Nubian, an Alpine, a Toggenburg. It is the Nubian's story I'm telling.

I had no barn at the time; but the man who was putting the roof on the beginnings of one was on that roof watching this Nubian and laughing his head off. The Nubian was yelling because she was staked to a tree with the other two while I was gathering what I did not want her to get into. This man told me about it when I got to where he was working:

This Nubian was yelling Waaaaaaa over and over with each yell getting louder than the one before it. (She had hay & she had water.) She was prancing around that tree yelling and looking for me. All of a sudden she accidentally stepped into her water bucket. This carpenter told me she stopped yelling, looked down at the turned over water bucket and then let out the loudest yell of all. He could have sworn she was saying, "...and now look what you've made me do!!!..."

Gotta love goats to put up with our spoiled ones.........
