Let's do it twice... in a month!

Alright, as you know I had three does give birth on Jan. 11, 12 & 13th... all three does came back into seasons w/i three weeks. I never figured out why the does came back in, with kids on them, but aparently it was real. Now one of the does has come back in again, and again w/ a kid (twins actually) still nursing, and I'm figuring she wasn't bred on the first go-round.

This has never happened here before, and I'm not sure I like it, but I am at a total loss as to the cause... anyone else have any ideas? Could they be false heats?... the bucks sure don't think so!

The same thing happened to me last year. My Nubian does kidded in early December 2011 and kidded again on June 21, 2012. I know my buck was harrassing them right after kidding but they usually just ignore him. There was no "rut" per se. Just some blubbering so I didnt' worry about it. Would the buck harrassing them make them cycle again? I don't know. I blame the drought because that is the only thing different.

My question is....why did you think they wouldn't?

Who told you that does stop cycling when they have kids on them or were "in milk"?

They are animals. December and January (or even later in some breeds) does will come into heat and be bred, regardless of whether or not they kidded.

Mainly because they have not done this in the past 11 years of raising them. The only thing different this year than past years is the introduction of two new Boer bucks back in July.

Did you always kid them in December or January?

Did you always have a buck available in the past?

The presence of a buck will definitely cause heats to be seen more easily but that doesn't mean they weren't there before.

I'm beginning to wonder if some of mine stood for the buck without having cycled. If not, they are way over due. They are pg and bagged up and lost ligs and I can feel babies kicking. No mucous and no labor yet.

Oh, just wait till your dairy does manage to get pregnant in june or july. That was fun times for this newby who thought they only thought they could get preggo in the fall thru the winter. No so said the little kids.

flushing can cause heat cycles right after kidding, it can give you three kiddings in two years, it can happen anyway but normally an increase in nutrition helps
