Least expensive place to buy a machette?
I realize that might be a weird question. They are about $40 at TSC, and I can't think of another place that even sells them. I;d love to have one for less than that, though... I have a lot of trees with good branches I could feed my goats, and tons of cattails, but would need a machete to get them.

LOL, when I saw the thread title I thought "Oh surely the goats aren't that bad!"
I don't know another place to buy one either.

I wouldn't pay that much! I bought one at the hardware store for 5 or 6$. Works just fine.

no, it's for their benefit, not butchering.

if you have a large fleamarket near you there is often military grade machette and other blades that work great in various stands all over a good flea market, at least they are down here in the south,

I've also seen them at walmart...not sure on quality but they are at a very reasonable price.

Do you have an army suplus store in your area? They might have them if you can't find one anywhere else.

You're feeding cattails to the goats?? I collect them in the spring and we eat the hearts, but it never dawned on me to offer them to the goats. I've got bunches of them.
Do you only feed the young plants, or does size matter?

I have a Gerber I got for about $25 I think it was, it's OK. Yes Harbor Freight has cheap ones. They're $5 when on sale. I believe it's just a low carbon steel blade so it will likely need frequent sharpening and need to be kept oiled to prevent rust. But I think it works just fine.

When you look at them, flex the blade a LOT, and make sure it doesn't stay bent.
Tap it with a hard object, and you should hear a ringing tone vs a dull "thud"
A CHEAP machete is seldom a GOOD machete.
A GOOD machete can last a lifetime.
Some good name brands are "Tromantina" and "Imacasa"
Look for those made in Central and South America, where they use them all the time, and NOT CHINA
I have a couple of Imacasa's from El Salvador that are well over 30 years old

Mine have been eating the fuzzy "tails" when we go for a walk. Funny to see them with fluff hanging out.
