Angry Franky is starting to bald again

Grrrrrr.....I was hoping the Replamin would put a halt to this yearly frustration. I have Cylence but I see that is just for lice. I don't see lice on him. What should I use to treat for mites. He is balding around his eyes and on his front legs. I put DE in the bedding but I guess that is not working good enough. Injectable Ivermectin?

The vet recommended injectable ivermectin at 6 times normal dose plus a series of dips (in my case baths) with lime sulfur for her mange mites. It worked on Timmie very well after years of horrible problems.
But Timmie had crusty sores and horrible itching with hers. If Franky isn't itchy, can it really be mites?
Maybe he is just one who sheds his winter coat before his new coat grows in?

I don't know what else it could be? I tried zinc supplement last year and that didn't help. There are no sores..just very flaky skin and thinning hair. Do I inject the ivermectin?

Have you had him checked to make sure it is definitely mites?

Well injecting ivermectin can't hurt. Well- actually I guess it stings a bit but Timmie got shot of 3 times normal dose at first. I rubbed it vigoruosly for a bit right after the shot.
Later I repeated the series of three treatments the vet recommended and used 6 times dose orally.

3 times the normal for cows? (1cc per 110lbs) That would be about 3 cc's then fro a shot and/or 6 cc's orally for a goat at 110lbs....right?

I dug out the vet's instructions. It was 2cc per 50lb of Ivomec Plus or Noromectin Plus (that's ivermectin and clorsulon) once a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Then apply lime sulfer dip, mixed as directed at the same time.
I ended up splitting the shots into two, one for each side, as the volume was large.

One of the problems with mites is that sometimes they are quite deep. Tim had several scrapings deep enough to bleed and the vet did not find mites. But she said that as Timmie's response was so good to the treatment, it had to be mites.
I plan to give her one more treatment series when the weather warms as she still has a bit of a problem around her tail.

But what Timmie had was soooo much worse than Franky's sounds. She had crusty, weepying sores that itched mightily.

Also I had tried a series of Ivermectin alone a number of times- it seemed to make it a bit better but not much and it got bad right away again.

I did skin scrapings on him in the past but never got a pos. I don't think I went deep enough....but he was sunburned and I felt so bad doing it
The stuff I have is Noromectin (1% ivermectin)....not ''plus''

Something the vet said too when I saw her putting a piece of scotch tape right over the slide of the scraping as soon as she did it- mites tend to leave the glass slide right away unless held down by the tape.
The Plus part was needed for Timmie. The ivermectin alone did not do much.

I use the ivomec injectable at 1 cc per 50 pounds. And yes, inject it under the skin. Do once a week for 3 weeks. Also wouldn't hurt to dust him with an actualy livestock dust. Last week my girls were getting awfully itchy. I dusted them and the next day they wer much better. I will dust them again on day 10 which will be Tuesday. Itms that time of year for those nasty little bugs it seems. And some animals are just more prone to them than others.

I use the zipcide livestock dust from the farm store. It's for cows and horses. You can use it on dogs too.

It was always a spot on his shoulder...that would thin out over his flanks. It's always flaky skin. He looses a lot! I'll try to find the picture. I thought it might be fungal so treated with MTG and he got sunburned really bad my fault

These are a couple of the Mite sites I keep book marked just in case I need to look them up since I have had in the past 1 doe & 1 buck get mites before. That was a few years ago but like trnubian said this seems to be the time of year goats start having problems with them.
Anymore I dust everyone this time of year just in case & make sure to try & get it all the way to the skin.

That picture looks like he was itchy. It's in a perfect spot for a good rub.

If you have Sevin dust for your garden you can use that to dust them. I would also do the Ivermectin Plus. I've had great success with that.

Poor Franky....hope he gets his his back soon!!

Ivermectin.

Also in spring if you can entirely clip the animals, scrub them with a scrub brush to remove loose skin and then let them out in the sun it really helps.

Those pictures do look like Timmie did in the early stages. I think if I had done the mange treatment earlier she wouldn't have been so bad. But the vet kept saying no mange.
The bottle of lime sulfur was very inexpensive from Jeffers. I know you can't use it til it warms up but I can't tell you the difference it make doing that along with the Noromectrin Plus. She actaully had chewed bleeding sores all over herself. I had tried all sorts of things from dog skin treatments, DE, synergysed insecticide, to fungual cures to insecticidal baths and nothing fixed the problem. It might have improved for a few days, then right back.
Finally I took Timmie into the vet again (after many other visits) and said that she was suffering and something had to be done- that it had to be mange. And within a couple of weeks, she was regrowing hair and looking so much happier with the course of treatment the vet gave.
