I have an eye injury (vent)

Sitting here crying out of one eye in intense pain I guess I wasn't responding appropriately as Rocky was trying to wake me up this morning. Usually it's kisses. This morning I opened my eyes and he smacked me right in the left eye with his furry, long nailed, rough padded paw. I felt my eyelid turn inside out. Saw stars...pain. It felt like something was in there...still does. I flushed and flushed with saline. Investigated under magnification. Checked every single eyelash. I cannot find any foreign object but it feels like a piece of sand is in there....With all the tears and flushing it would have to be come out by now so I'm thinking it's scratched cornea. I don't have what I need to do an eye stain to check. I used non steroidal ointment. I put ice on it and fell asleep for a couple of hours. It's still there I'm thinking it must be either a wound underneath my upper eye lid or a scratch that I cannot see. This started at 6am and it is now 2pm. I have not gotten ANYTHING done. The pain is irritating and keeping me form starting the projects I had planned for today.
Rocky feels so guilty...He is glued to me and won't go outside to play.

If you were my horse, I would be calling the vet. I've always been told that eyes were nothing to fool with. Maybe it would be good to see the people vet, ie your doctor?

I could but won't. Too much Dineros $$$$ plus I am very familiar with eye injuries from working at the vet. I know what to look for for ulceration. I know what meds to use and I have on hand except for what I need to stain it. It's pretty much swollen shut right now but I have to try to keep it open because it hurts more when it's completely shut. The pain is what is keeping me from functioning in my normal way. I'm a bit scared to take it outsid in the cold and snow with sun glare. Maybe sunglasses and goggles would help. It really hurts.

They are for life.
You can't get a new one.

If something happens, there is no amount of money you wouldn't pay to have your eye back. You'd sell your car to get your eye back - why the heck not - you can't drive with no depth perception. You'd do ANYTHING to have your eye back.

So pawn something if you have too, and get your eye checked out. Intense pain and swelling for hours after an eye injury IS something to be seriously scared off. Go NOW before everything closes and you're stuck paying emergency room fees.

Heck, go see your boss, the vet, if you have to but get your eye checked!

I would go see my boss...he is an EXPERT with eye injuries. He is out of town though. Ugh. I just put a cut up maxi pad on it and taped it down and will try going outside to get the chores done.

I'm visually impaired, born that way. Can never drive. I'm envious of your eyes, so take care of them, darn it!

Bad Rocky, bad Rocky. Go to the Dr. The pain doesn't go away for a long time. You need medication (translation;drugs) When she was a toddler, my daughter stuck a diaper pin into my eye, I pulled it out, but it didn't stop the pain.It was unbearable.With medical treatment, it took more than 2 weeks for the pain to subside.The meds made life bearable.

My dad was an eye doc, and the general rule for that type of scratch is to use an antibiotic ophthalmic ointment withOUT steroids. Steroids can interfere with healing.

I've had both kinds of eye injuries -organic (dog paw) and inorganic (metal). My eye doc told me that inorganic injuries hurt by far the most and I had to agree. The dog claw injury was very painful for about 3 days, but the metal scratch took far longer to subside. The metal injury also resulted in some sort of scarring that would flake off little gritty bits periodically for a year or more. Did you have any lasting problems after the puncture? Arghh! The thought of a puncture just makes me shudder!

Min, I hope you get some relief from the pain. That's such a bummer.

I have had scratched eyes..mostly from hard contacts and once from sawdust. You are in pain. And mine always felt like there was something in it. For me, opening my eye was the most painful..because of the light and because the air hit the scratch. But air is what you need. I would wear sunglasses..even in the house. I would not put a patch on if you don't know if it is infected or not. Bacteria might like that dark moist place.

Since it's this bad..I think you should go to the emergency room or call an eye doctor. Since it was a dogs nail..you don't want to take a chance of infection in your eye. They can give you some eye drops to help ya out.

How much do you spend on an animal that gets sick? No one puts off going to docs more than me..but I think that your eyes are a whole nother ballgame. This is an injury and probably needs treated.

It actually feels much better with the eye patch on! But I will only leave it on while outside and in the dusty barn. I have antibiotic ointment in it. When I'm done being outside I'll take the patch off and do some investigating. If it's still swollen I will put Ice on it. I think the moving around and being outside is helping!

From the swelling, it could be that it is the inside of the lid that is scratched. I don't think there is any difference in the pain level, and treatment with antibiotic ointment would be the same. Owie owie owie. My eyes are watering in sympathy.
