Any ideas to make coccidiosis medicine more pallatable?
Hi,
First, I'm new to this forum, so hi to everyone. I have 3 doelings that I have begun the preventative coccidiosis treatment on. I'm using Sulmet 12.5% drinking water solution, but administering it orally per the directions on Fiasco Farms website, but boy do they hate it!! The first night I put molasses in it and they absolutely acted like they were going to die ( I think I have one drama queen). Tonight was night two, I mixed with Kool Aid ( I got the idea off another thread I read here). They didn't act as horrible, but if anyone has any better ideas, I'm game. I have 2 more does that are going to kid next month, this will be my first time having any does kid, so I'm sure I'll be back with plenty more questions.
Thanks!

Dyne? What is dyne?
Sulmet is, unfortunately, not one of the coccidia meds recommended for goats. Sorry.
I've been using Deccox M mixed with a dab of molasses and syringed in their mouths.

We don't use Sulmet, but I put the Corid we use in right in the bottle/lambar. Sometimes I put snowcone syrup in also if I get a high drama bunch of kids.

Snow cone syrup! They will drink it down meds and all. So far the favorite flavor here is cherry.

Oh an Walmart carries the snow cone syrup. In a pinch I've used Torani coffee flavorings equally well but WAY more expensive.

We use corrid and just put it in their milk bottles. We bottle raise babies so that makes it easier.

I use Toltrizuril (Baycox). You only have to administer it once, instead of days in a row.

Nothing works to help the taste. I tried everything and ended up with the taste stuck in my mouth for hours. 4 beers will finally take the taste away.

Try dissolving some sugar into it.

So, whats the best thing for me to do, since I already started with the Sulmet. I read on Fiasco that Sulmet works better than Corid, but then I see that some people are just the opposite, so should I finish with the Sulmet since I startred with it? I could give them a different treatment the next go around? Wow, so much to learn!!

I would just change to a better med. Don't risk the kids' health.

This is why we switched to Baycox. It may not taste any better (I don't know) but you only have to get it down them once per treatment, as opposed to 5 days running. So they are easier to surprise with the dosage syringe, lol. Plus, I believe it is more effective. Good luck!

I have used sulmet powder for years and only sulmet. I do the preventative starting at age 21 days. It's worked fine.
I make a batch in a jar then keep it there for the week of treatment. Each day I draw up the amount needed for all the kids and put it in a smaller jar and add molassas. Each kid gets his/her weight appropriate dose from a dosing syringe.
The first day I do it is a wee bit of a circus but shortly they will stand there with just a hand placed on their chest while I slowly squirt it in. I try not to squirt in more than they want to swallow. By the time the kids have be through it a few times, they will not even move away when I come with it.
At the end of the treatment week, I throw away what ever is left of the refridgerated solution.

I mix it with a little rice flour and stevia. No problem.

I too use Sulmet with success. Only as a prevenative, not a treatment.
I just put an individual dose in a small bottle of milk and each kid gets one to make sure they all get the proper dose. After they all get their small bottle I put the lamb bar back in and they fill up the rest of the way with plain milk.
