Right Now Onxy- finally got some
Been looking for this for months. My poor goats have had to make do with some horse vitamins and a mineral salt block. There was NOTHING for them at the stores and all the minerals were for sheep or multi animals and no copper. I went into an ACE hardware that has feed. We don't get into there often. And they have a pallet of the Onyx!!! I bought a bag. It was $30 for 50lbs. I don't know if this is about normal. Figure it will last a while. They also had purina Goat minerals, a 25 lb bag was $14.99 so about the same $$. I've heard the Onxy is better so stuck with this. Please tell me your thoughts?

Oh, I should mention that I've been doing more reading since our Doe lost her premie kids. I read that high sulfer in water will cause copper deficiency. I do know for a fact out water has VERY high sulfer content. We have had it tested twice. It's safe to drink, as in no bacteria or nitrites, but the iron and sulfer was high.

Right Now Onyx is the preferred loose mineral for goat owners.
Yes, high iron causes copper deficiency, as well as high molybdenum. High sulfur causes selenium deficiency. IIRC sulfur also inhibits zinc uptake.

Money well spent on the Onyx. It should last a long time.

I just found some too, at our local Agway! They carry Cargill products, and they can get it in for me - I forget what the price was, but it was under $30.
Good to hear!

I taste everything here on my farm. Curiosity killed the cat in some cases... lol. Allows me to often gauge how goats will react to something I'm trying to give 'em. Doesn't always go as planned. Super sweet smelling tasty stuff may be seen as 'poison'.
I can't get Onyx around here, unfortunately. Anybody have a link to a feed tag for Onyx for comparison for me?
I just paid over 30.00 for (2) 25lb bags of Sweetlix Magnamilk minerals for 'goats'. Now I'm wondering if it's not marked up because it's 'for speshul goats', where as Onyx is actually a cow mineral... Probably pretty likey, IMO.

It's about $35 here.

What this doesn't show though, is that many of the minerals are in chelated/very bioavailable forms.

While chelated/bioavailable forms are nice, if I have to pay more for it while a regular mineral is 'good enough', then it isn't worth the money. At some point, the cost outweighs the benefit.
35.00 for 25lbs or 50lbs? No thanks if it's only for 25 lbs. 50.00 for 50lbs? no thanks. If I could get it at about the same price as my other mineral, or if I was convinced the expense was directly beneficial to production, then maybe I'd consider it.

We started out with Golden Blend from Hoeggers, then ordered the Onyx. It really looked different, smelled different, texture more course, and the animals seemed to go for it. I think i noticed a difference too. We coppered them last summer, then started up on the onyx. Afterward, for the gals that looked a tad bit deficient, the fish tail went away, the coat color got richer again, and since we started them on the onyx thereafter, they seem to have maintained. Not sayin we wont copper again, but they may not need it as often?
As for the taste - (yeah, I sampled a wet finger tip full) it's kind of minty/earthy/salty - and it looks dirt black!

Well if you could ship me a $30 bag it would probably cost twice that so I will be thankful that I can get it in the first place.

The $35 is for a 50 lb bag...I don't think Cargill makes them in 25 lb bags.

I paid $29 for 50lbs of the Right Now Onyx and have used it for years.. Good mineral.
I'm switching to Bluebonnet Techmaster as it's something I can get here at my new place easier and for whatever reason, my crew decided, after years of readily eating it, that they no longer like the Onyx.
I like the tag on the Bluebonnet Techmaster and it has added yeast and kelp, while still being comparable in price... My bag should be in next week (had to order it) so we shall see how they like it
