Babies -- Pics as promised!

Yesterday morning, Calico had twins!

Babies -- Pics as promised! - Goats

After months of nervous, uncertain waiting, she finally delivered! Since all our goats were on pasture, including two bucks, we have been wondering who the daddy would be . . . turns out, Elvis lives! Elvis was our Boer Buck who died at the end of last summer. In a few weeks, he went from 150+ lbs to about 70 lbs. We knew he was chasing the ladies and we suspected he wasn't taking the time to eat that he should have been, but in retrospect, we fear that worms might have had the final say. Say hello to Lisa (aka Lisa Marie) and Red Sage (the one with his mouth full!)

THIS Morning, Ms.Speckles finally burst! Wonder of Wonders, Elvis lives again!!! Say Hello to (Black) Beauty and Boots!
Babies -- Pics as promised! - Goats

As you can see, everyone is nice and warm and dry in our basement, soaking up the wood heat and wondering why the television isn't working! Right now, we are getting a cold, wet rain on top of a foot of snow . . . Maybe in a week, we'll put the babies back out in the barn . . . Maybe sooner if they make more mess than they're cuteness can excuse

So its official, out of 6 does, 1 died of pneumonia, 1 fevered and miscarried, 1 doesn't appear very pregnant, 1 delivered Elvis' triplets outside during a Nor'easter, and 2 delivered healthy Elvis twins . . . so what are the odds that buck#2 is a dud?

Usually a stick like that is to keep the goat from sticking her head through the fence and getting her horns stuck.

Close, Blue Run, very close! Actually Speckles is a little too smart for her own good! We use hay nets of various and sundry types to keep the goats from wasting hay. One of the nets had a smaller, weaker braid that Speckles learned she could chew through. After a couple days in a row of untangling Speckles from a NEW hole and patching the OLD hole, we figured out that she was chewing holes, poking her whole head through, and pigging out while everyone else was working for their food!

We ordered a better netting, but for her safety, she was awarded the "Stick of Shame" that at least would keep her from getting her head stuck in the net. That net has since been retired by one purchased from www.gourock.com (I really like the 10x5, folded in half and sewed/knotted on 2 sides to make a pocket!), but the "Stick of Shame" lives on
