What Kind of "Dog" Is That?
MrStillery's post mentioned someone asking what kind of dog his goats were, and in another post someone mentioned the neighbors wondering what kind of goat their Great Dane was, who ran the pasture with their goats.
Reading these reminded me of the time everyone around me was sharing pictures of their dogs. I showed a video on my phone of my "dogs" who were actually my doelings playing, saying my dogs were LaManchas. Everyone got it, except one woman, who said they look like goats. I told her they were goats.... but she still didn't understand. She became more and more amazed as the video progressed, and kept saying "They really DO look like goats!" I kept saying, "That's because they ARE goats." Still amazed, she would respond with some comment like, "They actually move like goats!" "Oh look! They even head butt like goats!"..... Not one of us could keep a straight face, or make her understand that they are, in fact, goats. It was unbelievably funny?
Who else's goats have been mistaken for a dog?

My family say's silkie chickens look like dogs or kittens. But that's all.
My Dober was the 'horse', until I got real horses, now he is a 'goat'.
Did anyone say, 'i just call my goats dogs because that is how they act'? Some people need a really straight forward explanation....or just never get it...kind of sad in a way...

All the time. We had some guy at petsmart think our chocolate doe Carma was a doberman with a REALLY bad crop job. Yep all the time, and we get asked why we cut their ears off.

Our first goat, Rosabell, was this lovely golden colored Alpine/Sanaan cross. Against all rules, we raised just her and gave her as much attention as any dog and she grew up part of the family. DD used to sneak her in to sit on the couch and watch TV.
When we went walking, we would put her on a leash, call the dog and go off down the road.
My favorite was this one time when a woman stopped her car and said "What kind of dog is that? He's so beautiful!"
We called Thunder Dog and went over to the car where Rosabell jumped up, hung her little cloven hooves over the open window and stuck her horned head into the car to be admired.
"He's a German Shepherd, Border Collie cross," I answered, waving toward Thunder.
"Oh, he's nice too, but I meant this yellow one."
I just smiled and gave the standard answer "That's Rosabell, she's a Golden Retriever mix - she's just ugly is all."
And got the standard response; " Ohh!" much petting on Rosabell "She's not ugly!!"

People only think *my* goats look like sheep.
In fact I have been forcefully informed that they ARE sheep, despite what I may have been told.
I am obviously not very educated about livestock.
But he could maybe pass for a poodle, if it weren't for the horns?

Ok, now you have to give him a poodle clip and a rhinestone collar and take him for a walk and count how many people think he's a poodle!!!

I socialize my babies at PetSmart. It gets them used to riding in vehicles and being in strange places.
Therefore, I cannot COUNT the number of times people asked me what breed of dog they were.

We had 2 horned ND does that we were transporting in a kennel in the bed of the truck when we stopped for gas. I noticed a man standing with his kids some distance away, obviously talking about them. I asked if they wanted to come closer, and the man said "Yes, because I can't figure out what kind of dogs those are." When I told him they were goats, he and the kids were amazed and got all googly eyed. They had never seen a goat before. Obvious city dwellers...I thought they still kept goats in zoos? Maybe not.

Just a couple of days ago, a lady and her daughters walked down the road. I have the does on one side of the road, and the bucks on the other. Yes, they were wondering what kind of dogs they were.
Yesterday, I was giving a goat keeping intro to a new acquaintance, and she kept talking about how the new kids look like kittens.
Yup. We are educating the world!

I can understand people mixing up sheep and goats... But dogs and goats? Cats and goats? Um... WHAT?! Seriously, the disconnect between people and the farm is scary. 50 years ago, nobody would have mistaken a goat for a dog.

I've never had the dog/goat thing happen but I swear every few weeks I get the 'I totally believe your ridiculous lie' kind of person who then always gets mad at me for having 'lied' and then tells people I'm a liar. It's hilarious. In this situation I would've been ragged at work for days for telling stories again!
I need one of these in my pocket:

People say Sammy Sheep is a goat. Admittedly, tho, he is out of place in his little goat herd. They can't even tell the difference, tho, when he BAAAAS. The BAAAA is a loud, braying obnoxious OBVIOUS "Baaaa!" vs the higher pitched "Maaaa." I just let it go, lol. He thinks he is a goat anyway.

Last spring I had all the kids (25) in the front yard when a young couple walked by with their son. I heard the little boy screaming "PUPPIES! PUPPIES!", soon the father asked if they could bring the little boy over to pet the puppies. I said sure you can bring him over but they are not puppies they are goats! They stayed for a very long time petting and playing with the kids and marveling at them as they had never seen goats before and had only "heard" how nasty and mean they were. After that they would bring goodies (veggies) for the goats everytime they walked by.
On another occasion I had one of my boer does and her kids in the truck after a day at the local kindergarten classes "Farm Animal" days and I went through the drive through at McDonalds and the gal at the window asked what kind of dogs they were?? The doe has very long horns and the kids as well had little horns.....I replied Basset hound mixes...the gal motions to a co-worker to come look at the dogs with horns.....The coworker (who happens to know me) immediately comes to look and gives the other lady a crazy look and says "you IDIOT those are goats!"....she quickly says that I told her they were Basset mixes.....the coworker says "You asked a stupid question and she gave you a stupid answer!"
