The Plague of The Fiber Goat???

I came across the face of an angel on CL, many months back.... a teeny tiny white fiber goat. The price was right, and I was all set to go buy her when the seller told me I would not want to put her in with my other goats because she had lice! It was a deal breaker for me, even though the seller assured me that all fiber goats have lice.

So I must ask, is this true? Do all fiber goats have lice?

If it can be treated, how might this be treated? (I'm thinking shaved and dipped at the vet before coming home......?)

Lice is a common problem in goats. Lice are pretty much species specific, so can't live and reproduce on other animals or on humans. I have bought a few goats with crawlies. I put Sevin dust in their bedding and the bugs are gone within a week

5% Sevin dust works well on chickens, rabbits, and cats. Anything that works well on rabbits and cats with no ill effects to the animal is probably safe for any animal. It is very effective for lice, It is the only insecticide that I ever use, on my animals or in the garden because of the safety. One should not use it on plants that bees pollinate, because it is very deadly to them, and they carry it back to the hive on their fuzz.

I wouldn't use the 10% stuff on animals. Don't know that it is too strong, but the 5% has always worked well so why take a chance.

Maybe all fiber goats have lice because they don't want to apply a product and ruin the fiber? If so, seems like you could do it right after shearing them and by the time it's ready to harvest again it should be good to go. I wouldn't use a topical liquid, usually those are waterproof and may mess with the fiber. A powder like Sevin dust shoudl work well though.

And since you shouldn't put any goats in with your main herd without a biosecurity isolation period anyways, you can treat her for lice a round or two before introducing her to everybody.
