Unhappy Keep my Snap in your thoughts tonight...

My Lamacha doe is just not acting right. She kinda acts as if she can't see well and is uneasy on her feet.... the look in her eyes is that of worry and freight. I spend tons of time with my girls and this is just not her norm. She has a great appetite and doesn't have a fever. I'm thinking Polio or listirosis (spelling?) is the cause. I've started her on Vit B Complex (has 100mg of Thaimine in every cc) and after talking to my vet, I gave her a heavy dose of Biomycin. I know most use Pen G in this case but I'm trusting my vet knows what he's talking about. He said it isn't Polio if she's eating well. I'm hoping I caught it quickly, my only other thought is Deer Worm. I may hit her with some Ivromectin tomorrow if I see no improvement.

Keep my sweet girl snap in your thoughts... it's always my favorites that get sick, never the ones destine for the dinner table.

Valerie

PS: I disbudded kids for the first time on Sunday! That's a huge step for me, always had someone else come in and do that for me.

I hope your doe recovers! It's difficult to have the favorite ones get sick or die. Seems like the norm, tho sometimes. Let us know how she does!

Thinking of her. If it is polio, you should start to see improvement very quickly.

I really hope your girl gets to feeling better quickly.

Isn't this the 3rd doe with these symptoms in as many days. This is getting scarey!

I'm asking more experienced people but can it hurt to add fortified B complex in case it's goat polio? Anytime I do an anitbiotic, I also do the Vitamin B.

She's giving Vit B complex, which as 100mg/ml of Thiamine. Rx thiamine is generally 200mg/ml, so be sure to double the dose of Vit B complex given.

After the first few shots every 6 hours and if you see improvement, it's Polio. You can start giving Vit B orally so you have to poke them less.

Thank you everyone for sending healing thoughts Snap's way.

I have to be at work Zero_dark_thirty in the morning so she's in DH's hands until I get home this afternoon.

He said she's up and eating.... so I'm thinking she's about the same as yesterday. I will give her another round of VitB and Biomycin when I get there.

The Vet said 5cc of VitB and 4.5cc of Biomycin. How does that sound to you all? MyGoat, you said to double the VitB.... should I be giving her 10cc of that? I'd guess she's about 80-100lbs.

Thank you again, it's so wonderful to have such amazing goat-loving friends to call on in times like these.

Val

if there are 100mg of thiamine per ml/cc then at 5cc's she's getting 500mg so it sounds like you're fine on that dose.

Here's a wonderful article on Polio/Listeria.

http://www.tennesseemeatgoats.com/ar...steriosis.html

Check your thiamine levels in the b-complex you have. For 100mg/ml thiamine, the dose is 4.5cc per 100lbs. But if the concentration is different, your dosage will be different.

Crossing my fingers for you. Keep up the high doses of antibiotics for several days - don't stop early.

I've lost 2 to neurological from listeria over the years and possibly had one abortion from it, so I hate hearing of others having problems.
