Off topic: Canola oil

I know someone will ask why I said not to use Canola oil. There's a LONG explanation, but here's a quote from a website that sums it up pretty well.

http://www.dirtdoctor.com/Canola-Oil...ter_vq4587.htm

Rapeseed oil is the source behind mustard gas, and on its own, it causes emphysema, respiratory distress, anemia, constipation, irritability, and blindness. But through the beauty of genetic modification, we now sell it as edible oil.

The claim is that canola is safe to use because through modification it is no longer rapeseed but “canola.” Except… canola is just genetically modified rapeseed. It has been marketed as wonder oil that is low in saturated fats with a beneficial omega-3 fatty acid profile. It is recognized by the American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association based on the belief that the absence of saturated fats alone makes it healthy.

It is now believed that rapeseed has a cumulative effect, taking almost 10 years before symptoms begin to manifest. One possible effect of long-term use is the destruction of the protective coating surrounding nerves called the myelin sheath. This is like having raw, open wires in the body. Some symptoms include:

tremors and shaking
uncoordination when walking or writing
slurred speech
deterioration of memory and thinking processes
fuzzy or low audio levels
difficulty urinating/incontinence
breathing problems/short of breath
nervous breakdown
numbness and tingling in extremities
heart problems/arrhythmia
From a nutritional perspective, canola oil has been found to deplete Vitamin E. It has a tendency to inhibit proper metabolism of foods and normal enzyme function. It also depresses the immune system.

If you have thyroid issues, canola is also on the list of foods to avoid.

We use coconut oil and grapeseed oil primarily. Olive oil sometimes. I'm just not a fan of olives and olive flavor.

Alice, my grandfather always swore up and down that canola was awful stuff. I don't remember much as to his reasoning (I was a teenager), but even then I still have never purchased or used it. I too use grapeseed oil and coconut oil almost exclusively.

He was most likely familiar with it as an industrial oil. In it's pre-1988 form, it retained its toxins. Now it's genetically modified and highly processed. I'm reading about it on some other websites now. NASTY stuff.

We use coconut oil as well. Since we go through a lot of it, we buy the refined stuff in bulk. Not as good as the virgin stuff probably, but a good oil that your body will use and good for the thyroid. http://m.webstaurantstore.com/gold-m...s/3802654.html

Thanks for the links Alice.
I'm sure there are a lot of folks like myself that have used canola oil for a long time that would like to read those links so I plan on sharing.

We just switched from canola to safflower oil because of the whole GMO thing. I had no idea about all the other stuff! Thanks for sharing.

When are we (especially Americans, as a whole) going to learn that newer is not always better? There are so many health problems that exist today that no one ever heard about when we were growing up.
Thanks for sharing Alice.

Thanks for the information, Alice. I do almost all the cooking at home (DW happily cleans the kitchen in exchange), and while I don't use much oil at all, probably 95% of what I do use is olive oil and butter. A quart of oo will last me about 2 months. I do have canola oil for certain recipes because it's almost tasteless, unlike olive, but I'm going to switch to something else now.

You might like the grapeseed oil. Very light and mild.
