What are you feeding your goats ....

talking about "grain" only:

....during winter that is different from what you feed them during hot season?

....during pregnancy that is different from during lactation?

New borns that have begun to eat?

I've been raising goats since 1996 and have switched the type(s) of grain I feed (slowly) several times. Am curious as to what others are feeding and why. (I live in selenium deficient area; but copper content is good. Iron is low in soil/vegetation as well as low in the well water.) Goats have plenty of "browse" and endophyte free grass/hay.

In the winter months when in early pregnancy or dry I give them 1/4c. a.m. & p.m. of a 16% dairy pellet mixed equally with crimped oats(so 50 pound bag dairy pellets & 50 pound bag of crimped oats mixed together).

I do up their feed a little when they get a month out from kidding to 1/2 cup feed mix a.m. & p.m. & start giving a littlt alfalfa pellets to make sure they get enough calcium.

They also have alfalfa/grass hay 24/7 year around. Browse when it's the right time of year. Everything dried up & snow covered now.

When milking or nursing kids (kids eat with mom at this time) I give each doe 1 1/2 to 2 cups of my feed mix. Same hay but all the alfalfa pellets they want on the stand. If I'm not milking them I have the 2 sided black dishes from TSC that I put alfalfa pellets in 3 or 4 times a week. Got me thinking now I can't remember exactly how much grain I gave last year a.m. & p.m. while milking but I think the above is pretty close.

Kids eat with their dam's. When they start getting too big & need more food I give them their own dishes so mom has enough to eat.
