Straight From The Goat

ani's ark's comment on another thread, where she mentioned adding warm goat milk and brown sugar to her porridge (Yum!), made me want to ask for other ideas....... How do you use your warm milk, straight from the goat? (After straining of course!)

I fill my coffee mug with warm goat milk, add a teaspoon of instant coffee, a little sugar, sometimes a dab of vanilla bean paste, or a pinch of cinnamon (but usually just have it "straight") for the yummiest "Goat Latte" in all the world. In the summer I pour it directly over ice. I promise you, those Starbucks bottles of lattes have nothing on a Goat Latte!

You can make a very fresh fast ricotta or chevre - into the cheese vat/pot straight after milking and filtering. I then like to use a 1/2 clove of finely grated garlic, cracked pepper, salt and some herbs to make a spread. If you can wait long enough to make that for breakfast, it goes beautifully on a slice of crunchy wholegrain toast with a thick slab of homegrown tomato on top and a goat latte beside it!

And it's not MY use as such, but dont forget other animals for fresh milk. While I milk a queue forms - dogs at the back door, cat purring and winding about the milking stool, piglets now pressed against their gate grunting excitedly, and goat kids bleating for mum to hurry up and feeed them.
They say the dairy animal feeds the farm - they are right! My feed bill is really only for the goat grain and the dogs.

Make cheese immediately. Bring the milk straight in, heat a little if necessary, add the culture and rennet, and do the other stuff for what cheese you are making.

I like to pour it into a glass with about a tablespoon of honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg., then stir and drink.

Hey, the Vikings had it right!

I do like making cheese straight from the goat too! It sounds so wholesome and good to say that the first time it is refrigerated it is already cheese. And the cheese is fantastic!

It is wonderful how many animals benefit from goat milk... someday I'll have other animals to share it with too. Some goofy vet told one of the people here to never give goat milk to a dog. So there are ten dogs on this property, but I'm only allowed to share with one of them. :/

Caliann, your yummy drink sounds amazing! I think I'll make it for my grandbabies, and call it a Viking Latte. They will get a kick out of that!

I've made Hot Vanilla with fresh goat milk too.... It's just like Hot Chocolate, but not! A small amount of vanilla bean paste in sweetened, warm milk....
