What's In A Name?
How did you come to name your goats as you did?

These are all pet names:
Dottie, for the dot on her tail skin.
Mattie, (RIP) because she always climbed the highest-Matterhorn.
Cookie, cause she was the color of a sugar cookie when she was born.
Nellie, cause she was a wild goat and always nervous around us.
Betty the boer, was old when we got her and just had the sweet old look in her eye.
Hannah, the tiny ND, white hair and petite, and I had just seen the movie by the same name.
Stormy Ann, Born on the first anniverasy of a bad, straight line winds storm we had the year before.
Otto, traditional boer with a spot on his back-as in "0" or "ot"?
Bardot, the boer cross we just couldn't settle on a name for, as in Bridgette "Boer doe".
Zeke, the mini mancha buck, I don't know-it just fit!
Annie, for antelope-her head looks like a deer.
Fern, was named Fawn by previous owners but it just didn't fit as well.
Angel, again named by previous owners for the white angel wing markings on her body.
Then there's brown boy, red boy, little boy, and big boy.. all wethers awaiting market, but I needed some way to ID them!
Scrappy, so named by our son because of her odd growing horn that broke when she was a kid.
The others are just refered to by color and sex.

The farm name is Quirky Goat Farm because all the goats I started with were from Emily (OzarkJewels) goats that had a quirk and couldn't go anywhere else. We had a self sucker, a one teated goat, and an unbred yearling. The name is PERFECT, even though we have more goats. They are just naturally quirky.
One year, we named all the kids after NCIS characters. Tony, Tim, Abby, Palmer, Gibbs, Ducky, etc... grand fun.
Lemon is the daughter of Orange.
Bella Noche was born at 11:00 pm.
Lily and Aster were born in the year I named goats after flowers.
Jubilee and Tyrelle were named after Louis LaMour characters (and another goat lady's new baby).
Tonto and Silver were from The Lone Ranger. Silver went to freezer camp. Tonto is our mini herd sire.
Prince Charming was out of Princess's granddaughter, and he was... charming.
Edited to add: It took Lily and Aster a while to learn their real names. I called them LITTLE WHITE GIRLS for so long, that was what they responded to.

Okay let's see here. Cherry is Just Because DZ Cherry Bud. Addie is Just Because SP-Addition and Chime is Just Because KWS Wind Chime. My breeder named all of them. Then we have Carma who is Just Because An Amazing Carma ( it was a C letter reason carma is spelled that way. Mom named her her that due to an ex and promises that never came through. Our buck from Tin mom was named after the tv show Dr Who...I believe. His name is Crossroads End Last Centurion. We call him by the nickname they gave him which is Geronimo.
Then we have monkey, she looked like s monkey as a baby. Gogurt... Mom seen a gogurt ad when she was bottle feeding her. Pepsi I have no clue lol. Booboo is Monkey's son and he was not planned AT ALL, so Eric named him It Happens I'm a Booboo. Mom's little wether is Black Jack or Jack. Johnny Goat is my youngest nephews goat. He named him that way before I ever found him.
Then the newest four are twins Onion and Tator brother and sister. Mom was eating funins (SP) when onion was born so it was funin onion, then shorten to just onion and what goes with onions... Tators so that is how she was named and the last two are Janna and Larry. Named after the owners of the livestock barn mom ran in Kentucky.
Since this year is a D year we are hoping for two grade does to get It happens I'm no dumb dumb. And it happens I'm a doh. Then if the doe named It happens I'm no dumb dumb has a baby when its the G year we will have It happens I'm dumb dumbs gum gum. That all comes from the movie night at the museum.

Let's see, some of the goats came with names, some I have named, some have been sold, etc.
my first kids ever were born the day after xmas to a doe named Cinnamon, buck/doe twins, Ginger and snap
My second kid born was out of a doe not long after my friend told me the goats were "frosted mini goats" (I lived in Jackson Hole, WY) and so I chose that as a herdname...I had only Nigerians originally and I had planned to name all the kids with "little" names. It was a doeling, which I named "Peanut".
All Lulu's kids from 2011 on are going to be apple names because hubby and I are South Park fans...LOL (Butters, "Lululu, I got some apples, lululu, you got some too..."). She had quads in 2011 named Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, McIntosh, and the forth was made a wether, so I left the naming to the new owners. 2012, she had a single buck that was left for new owner to name.
Blackberry is a black goat born to Shania, a 2011 kid, so stuck with the fruit theme.
Bought 4 alpine kids 2011, all looked like little deer; so their names, Fawn, Wapiti (elk), Moose, the last one is Galaxy because her tattoo number is 42 (Hitchkiker's Guide), and I just couldn't think of another "deer-like" name.
Shania's 2012 doelings are Jewel and Boots, for the "country singer" theme.
Domino has a domino on her side; Star because it was my daughter's favorite word at the time.
Blackberry's 2012 buckling is Black Bandit-he was Bandit the second day after his birth, because of his "mask", her doeling is Berries N'Cream ("Cream", so that her and Blackberry don't get confused when I call).

We sold the goats we had except for 2 & switched to a new breed.
Our 3 yr. old mini nubian doe is Daisey Do just cause she looked like a Daisey to me.
Moose is her 1st kid & he was so big when he was born dh wanted to name him Moose.
Our 2 little mini nubian does' we bought this past summer are Isabelle & Frances
Isabelle because she is the original 1 we put a deposit on at 2 weeks old & her dam's name is Isadora so I was trying to think of an I name that would match on her paperwork.
Then we decided to get her twin sister too but I couldn't think of another I name at the time & since I had a grandma named Isabelle & the other was Frances I named the sister Frances.
Our new little buck is Augustus but we call him Gus. I was trying to think of a name that was an old name like Isabelle & Frances.
Then we have Bentley who is a wether & Gus's best buddy. He just looked like a Bentley to me.

We have themes for our different animals. The Nigerian dwarf goats are named after different plants/flowers, so we have Zinnia, Juniper, and Phlox, and then Bailey who came to us with that name and we couldn't see her as any other name. The mini-Manchas are all named from the 1920 census list of names, and they are Ruby, Opal and Pearl. The Shetland sheep are named Scottish names, Bonnie and Effie (short for Euphemia). The Tarentaise cows are named French names with consecutive letters of the alphabet, so our 2 girls are Annabelle and Amelia and their offspring this year will have French names that start with the letter B, and next year the letter C, etc. The Anatolian shepherd dog is named Havva, which is the Turkish form of Eve and we're planning on using Turkish names for any further ASD's we get in the future.

Our herd name is "Arbre Sage" ("Wise Tree" in French), so, it is probably no surprise that, if you call out the goats individually, you will be saying "Bamboo, Icy Pines, Cypress, Sequoia....)
Yaiza, Thistle, Martok, Brie, and Mardis Gras came here with their names. Lady Nipsalot wan't bred here, so she was named for her habit of nipping any ears that were handy. She is "Nipper" for short.
Anything born here will get a plant name (Although I am going through trees first). Since there are millions of plants, I doubt I will run out names anytime soon.

I bought my nubians from Ann and Cecil. The does are Annie goat and Cecelia. Original owners thought that was great. My buck and his wether buddy came with their names; Butthead and Pepe.

Two Saanens. One is Ruby the other is Pearl.
I traded hay to a friend for these two girls. I got them for mom and she wanted to do a soap/lotion business with their milk. She wants to call it "Jewel Soaps" and all the providing goats will have jewel names. So, we started with Ruby and Pearl. Sometimes I wind up calling Ruby "rubix cube" because she's such a personality.

Gosh I have no rhyme nor reason for why I named my goats their names. If the name seemed to fit the goat that is what they got .
Right now I have
Eybie SD Nicoal's Ricoalette (came to me named but we call her Ric or Ricky)
Fir Meadow ALP Basil (also came to me named)
Fir Meadow Val Abraham (I got to pick Abe's name)
Goldenwood ABE Almost A Lady (she was such a KLUTZ when she was born!)
Goldenwood ABE Adele (she had and still has a very low voice for a doe)
Goldenwood ABE Ginger Rose (she was a pretty red head )
Goldenwood BLU Zoë Bird (don't ask me how she got the name...she was a runt and I always just called her my Zoë Bird)
Goldenwood BSL Just In Thyme (I named her Thyme due to the fact that her mom was making me late for a coffee date with friend and she came just in "thyme" for me to get there....until her two sisters didn't want to come out without help.)
Goldenwood CDC Penny Lane (No CLUE where her's came from, it just popped into my head when she was born)
Goldenwood VRT Twitterpaited (She got her name because when she was being delivered all the barn swallows where up in the loft being all twitterpaited . For those who might not remember that is what the wise old owl in Bambi said happens every spring to those in love.)
Ober-D'Rainbow KRT Renae (she was named before I got her and before I even knew her named I called her Brandy and it stuck)
Ober-D'Rainbow MSZ Toyland (there is Toy and then his sister Trinket )
Ober-D'Rainbow MSZ Trinkets (I don't know why I named the twins this..but they where my first bottle kids and I thought it was cute.)
Red Quilt BLU Milo (Milo was named Milo because....well I am not sure but he looked like a Milo to me. He was always way more dainty than his two hulking brothers and just seemed like a good fit for the name.)
Well that is all that is in my herd right now...I have had MANY more but I won't go into all of those names .

We only have two now. Belly Bean and Missy.
Belly Bean is actually registered as Lady Antebellum (because I thought that sounded like a great goat name. ). This got quickly shortened to Bella. Then, when she was pregnant and starting to show, we start saying she had a little bean in there. That evolved into Belly Bean and stuck.
Missy is registered Ariel's Star. But she is chocolate in color. In fact she reminded us of Swiss Miss hot chocolate. We started calling her Little Miss Swiss. This ended up getting shortened to Missy.

Andy is Andy because she looked like an Andy.
Spice's coat is the color of cinnimon.
Rain is Rain, I don't know why.
Thomas Hunter is named after a favorite book character. I know now that was big mistake. Whenever I re-read that book, and come across the big, burly, tough, Thomas Hunter, I think of the tiny, cute, fuzzy goat!

What a fun thread!
We (usually but not always) follow themes when naming our animals. We've done most of the characters from the movie Willow (in miniature horses and goats); Three Bags Full; a Sheep Detective Story (sheep); Star Trek, especially Klingons and Dax (goats); and we're currently doing Terry Pratchett names (sheep and goats).
When I knew I was going to get a Nigerian Dwarf from Gena, I looked for authentic Nigerian names and liked Azi (youth). When I told John he thought I said Ozzy, "Oh, like Ozzy Osbourne!" Well, whatever. So when I spoke for Ozzy's brother I wanted a similar name and came up with Iggy (Pop).

[QUOTE=iloveafarmer;6369369] The Shetland sheep are named Scottish names, Bonnie and Effie (short for Euphemia). [QUOTE]
<LOL> The very first lamb born here was Wolf Moon Ewephemia. People said is that a NAME? We borrowed it from a favorite British movie, Nuns on the Run (in it Eric Idle disguised himself as Sister Euphemia of the Seven Wounds).
A lot of our older sheep have (or had, if they're dead) Baa- and -baa names like the late, great Baamadeus, Baasha, Shebaa, Rebaa, Baabara, Baashir, Baandit, Baatiste, Baannie, Athabaasca, Baarak and Baarley.

When I told my DH that it was time and we were getting a pair of goats, he originally wanted to name them after the goats that pulled Thor's chariot, especially as the one was for carting.
I couldn't remember the names, though I remembered the story, and had to look them up. We found they were these awful, tongue twister names, that translated to "tooth barer" and "tooth grinder". Ummm, no.
So we decided to just go with Norse names instead. DD instantly campaigned for Erik, after Erik the Viking (a favorite movie)
We looked through some of those baby name websites and picked Dryna (pronounced Drin - rhymes with win - ah) for the doe. It is unusual and I think it's pretty.
I really wanted to name our next goat some variation of Rose, to me she is as sweetly pretty as the little wild roses. But I was overruled by the husband and child and she is Honeysuckle, which is still a name I like. I like botanical names in general.
Stormy and Jodie came here with their names. Stormy has evolved to Storm as he has gotten bigger and more masculine, but he gets Stormy when he's being clownish.
Jodie will likely get a call name. I don't know why but I seem to have a mental block with it and have called her every similar sounding name in the book, and even misspell it when I type. For some reason it just won't stick in my brain, and it's a perfectly nice name
I am pretty easy going on names and don't usually get the name I want. LOL, so long as I get the critter I want, DH and DD can call it just about anything they like.
But there are some names that I just absolutely Will Not Do. We will have no black and white beasties named Domino or Oreo. There will be no dogs named Buddy, and no mares named Foxy, Beauty or Lady (I have never ONCE worked in ANY stable where there wasn't at least one mare with one of those names). Nothing black can have the name Blacky or Smoky, nothing white will be named Snowball or any variation of.
Actually, color descriptive names are pretty much a pet peeve of mine, unless you get really creative with it. Like our last black cat was named Pagan, and our current one, Wicca.
And last, there will be no insulting or baby names. Like Puddles or Chewy or anything like that. I am not hollering for a 90 pound, grey muzzled dog named Puddles or Puppy or Fuzzbutt or some such nonsense.
Within these few bounds DH and DD (and surely DS when he's old enough) can pretty much name everything what they like. All it means to me is that I then get to keep the goat

Embarassing actually. My husband greatly admires the figure of big breasted mexican actress Salma Hayek. I admit it, she's hot. When I first went to milk the goat I had a strange moment of awareness that I was handling her breasts in very familiar fashion - to a city girl it was a shock to really "get to grips" with the fact an udder is BOOBS I got over it though!
So after DH said 'Dont you dare name your big breasted goat Salma' it was a given really.
I told him if he wants to get his hands on Salma's assets all he has to do is go out and do the milking. Her doeling Willow is called that because we have no kids and I always wanted a daughter named Willow, sad I know. Sausage is to remind me that he has a purpose and will NOT be my pet wether, no matter how cute and cuddly he is.
