Bred Doe with Scours

When to the barn this morning and one of our doe's, alice has green liquid scours ... She's a (healthy) 2 yo. thats never been sick a day in her life.

In 2 yrs we have never had any scours w/ any of our goats, and I'm unsure what to do.

We only gave her alpha pellets this morning and she is eating hay, my thought is be sure she is eating good and to watch her closely. ??

You can give her Kayopectate, take her grain away till she clears up.

Canned pumpkin works wonders.

How far along is she & when was she last wormed?
Are the alfalfa pellets something new to them or any feed changes?
Ditto on the "no grain", plenty of grass hay & make sure she is drinking plenty to stay hydrated.
Kaopectate or Pepto bismol can be given to help with the scours.
Folks here have said they've had good luck with canned pumpkin helping with scours. I haven't needed to try that yet.

She is 10 weeks and was wormed twice 10 days apart right before she was bred.

No changes in her feed, besides they were in the lower pasture 3 days ago (they graze down there often)

I would give the kaopectate & see if that helps. No wormers at all this early in pregnancy.
If there hasn't been any feed changes & she hasn't got into feed she wasn't supposed to maybe it's just a new weed she found hopefully.

I would take a fecal into the vet first thing in the morning. Lots of deaths around here lately due to worms, even with prior chemical wormings.

No, coccidia causes diarrhea and general "off". Low energy, sometimes low appetite.

We practiced cocci prevention every 21 days until she was approximately 6 or 7 months old

Do adult goat's get cocci?

It can happen. High body stress can lower the immune system and cause an adult goat to have a coccidia bloom that sucks up their thiamine.

Do you have thiamine or B-complex on hand? If so, give her that.

Must be bred doe diarrhea day. Huh.

I replied to the other post it could well be cocci. One of my bred does got stressed at about 4 weeks bred and had pudding and then real thin pudding poo, fluffed and hunched up, just "off". Took a fecal in and she had cocci. Treated with dimethox 40% and after the second day she was her normal ornery self.

I don't know the dosage for your brand of B-Complex. Dosage should be on the label.

Yeah, dbarj, I sometimes forget that adults can have a bad cocci bloom, because it is so rare. Generally a kid thing. But stress of pregnancy, plus it being winter, pretty much any heavy strain on the body, can do it in adults as well.

Its only labeled for Cow, Swine and Sheep ... The sheep dosage is 5 ml for 100 pounds of body weight, Is that enough for goats?

also

The label says it has 100 mg of thiamine per 1 ml of the vitamin contents/product

and

Will a 28 gauge 1/2" long needle suffice?

The dosage I use for vit. B complex if it's the one sold over the counter is 2cc per 35 pounds & yes that needle will work.

Thank you

She is about the same this morning (its been 24 hrs w/ scours) She is nibbling at hay and ate about 1/3 of a qt of alfalfa pellets.

She is feeling off, thats for sure

As long as shes eating and drinking a bit, how long can a goat have scours before they pass the point of no return?

I have Dimethox 40% but I dont want to treat her if she will get over the scours quick enough.

Have you tried the kaopectate or canned pumpkin? It is possible it is from Cocci like dbarjacres said. Do you keep Dimethox 40% injectable on hand since you practice prevention?

If so I would start her on a treatment dose with that. If she keeps up with the scours she will become very weak & dehydrated so it's good she's still drinking & eating a little bit but I wouldn't let it go too much longer without some type of intervention.

First thing I think of with scours in an adult animal is worms. Try giving her a good dose of Safeguard for goats since around here tapeworms are the main thing.

Shes doing much better this evening/she is eating normal and grazing

All we ending up doing was, One injection w/ vitamin B complex and some kao- pec

I was ready to give her di-methox 40% if she became any weaker, but so far, she has recovered with out it.

Still watching her closely tho
