Yes, I'm New.... And Here's A Thread To Prove It! :D

I'm am so pleased with myself, I must tell you.... I learned to trim my own goats hooves yesterday. I know it doesn't sound like much to those of you who have been doing it for years.... but this was huge for me.

Now I don't have to pay that highway robber who instilled such fear in me about doing it. So the girls all got a mani/pedi yesterday, and I joined the ranks of a ga-zillion CHILDREN in 4H who have learned to do this! It's ridiculous how good this makes me feel, to no longer be at the mercy of people who completely misrepresented the situation in order to get an exorbitant amount of money from me, when I clearly did not have it. So yeah, I'm a mythbuster, and my girls have beautiful "toes".

(Since none of you really know me yet, i should probably tell you the mani/pedi references are tongue in cheek.)

I just wanted to share this in case anyone else was apprehensive about doing their goats feet maintainence. I assure you, if I can do this, anyone can!

Good for you. I remember when I first learned, it was a huge deal for me too.

Way to go! It IS scary the first time. I could see all my goats maimed for life. I'm glad to see someone else calls it a mani/pedi!

Good for you! I know how you feel It's so great to get the courage up and just do it! Same with giving shots. I was always so afraid to give shots to any animals and always relied on vets to do it. Then one of my horses got sick and I HAD to give him 30cc's of Penicillin a day. That stuff is thick and I had to do 15 cc's on each side. ugh! But boy I learned fast. Now I give shots without blinking an eye. That is how hoof trimming will be for you. Did you use a rasp? I like using one of those...I started with small hand held one now I use a full size horse rasp. On my mini hooves...lol!!

Look at you go! I was so smug when I trimmed hooves the first time. Next will be blood draws.

Alright GoatJunkie! Love your user name by the way.
There's nothing like learning something new, especially something as necessary as hoof trims.

Thank you for your kind words, and I LOVE that so many of you could relate to the fear factor....

I don't have a rasp yet. I'll be buying one next week.... Be sure you're sitting down when you read this.... I'm going to tell you what this man charged me: $40 per goat. Seriously. I've got three goats.... I had to take matters into my own hands, literally. But what a relief to find out it really is not the same thing as brain surgery!

There are some great YouTube videos on how to do this, if anyone else needs to know.....

I like your screen name too, Goat Servant. And I love your tag lines!

I'm glad to know someone else calls them mani/pedis too!

As for shots and blood draws.... YIKES! I'm not there yet.... but I'll take everyone's word about it..... I think.... *laffin*

Of course it is a big deal! I was so scared the first time I tried to trim hooves. I had no clue what I was doing, I just knew I was going to ruin their feet forever. But I did it and I learned and watched countless videos.

There is a huge feeling of accomplishment when you conquer something new like that.

Nothing like the feeling of being able to care for the goats yourself.

Good for you!
