Toggenburg Size

I have 2 Togg sisters, owner died. They were supposedly 5 months old when I got them, but were half the size of my Alpine kids. They had been cared for by a non-goat person since her death, so they were skinny. That puts them at 11 months now, about 60 pounds and 22" at withers (do you measure goats the same place as horses?) Are these normal Toggs, or could they be minis? They are healthy and active, they just look very young. Also what about breeding? My other yearlings I wouldn't hesitate, but are these supposed to be smaller or do they need to catch up? The the standard says "medium" size, but what is medium? thanks

"Medium" is approximately 120lbs for a full grown doe. Either yours are minis or they are severely undersized.

Until and unless they hit 80 lbs, I wouldn't breed them to anything but a Mini or an ND, just in case.

I just weighed & measured my 2 mini nubian doelings this morning, they are 7 months old & 86 & 88 pounds pretty close. My 3 year old mini Nubian weighed using a tape 140 pounds.

Even for mini's at 11 months old those 2 girls sound really small.

It sounds like they where undernourished at their previous home. I wouldn't breed them right now and just give them another year to really grow and fill out some more. If they are getting good nutrition now they probably won't be stunted it will just take them longer to grow up. In my experience does grow for 3-4yrs before they are fully done. I would just make sure these two get great nutrition and maybe even give them some grain and calcium to help their growing bodies (if you are not already doing that).

Also during the winter my kids don't grow as much but you might be surprised when spring comes around again how they start to flourish again. But IMHO I wouldn't breed them to anything right now. Just let them put their energy into growing and filling out before you think about breeding.

Ditto other posters...would not breed them for at least a full year, watching how they mature.
