new bork with under-developed eyes?

I've never seen this before. One of the kid's little eyes were so tiny, it was unlikely she could see out of them. A day later they were matted yet more developed in that they were a bit larger and the little eye ball in there could be seen. The next day they were again matty and there appears to be another eyelid covering the eyeball. (I believe goats have 3 eyelids, though not sure.)

I have continued to wash off the "outside" of the eyes with an extremely weak solution of hydrogen pyroxide and warm water; yet this morning I decided to add a little dab of "AK-spore" (containing Neomycin Sulfate of 3.5 mg Neomycin base; Polymyxin B Sulfate equal to 10,000 polymyxin B units and Bacitracin Zinc equal to 400 baciltracin units..all in a white petrolium/mineral oil base). This evening one little eye shows the extra eye lid moving back and her little eyeball can be seen. The other eye looks better yet no eyeball showing up. Both eyes were still matting, yet not nearly as much. I washed them both again and applied another tiny dab of this AK-spore.

Has anyone any experience with this type of eye problem in newborns? If so, any advice would be appreciated.

microphthalmia is what it is called. It is a birth defect. Some say genetic, some say unknown. In people it can be a part of fetal alcahol syndrome.
If its true microphthalmia the matting and draining will not go away.

I'll google that to see if she will ever be able to see. Her dam is a small doe who has given birth to twins and triplets without any problems for 3 yrs. This year, her udder never made any milk and was large and hard. I'm real confused as to how this could have occurred as their feeding schedule (grain wise) has been the same all these years. (I have been concerned about their pastures because of the high drought and lack of nutrients. I had not had time nor money to get the pastures rennovated and they are full of the local fescue, which in its mature stage, has endophytes which I know causes hard knots in the udders.) Am now worried about my other does!

Regarding that hard udder, has she been tested for CAE?

Not since I bought her. I keep a CAE free herd; however, you've reminded me it might be wise to test them all again. Thanks

We had an 8 week old Mastiff brought into the vet clinic with what you are describing...although the eyes were not mattery. But they were very teeny tiny eyes. One was worse than the other. There was also some scaring (white haze) on the cornea in one eye. The 3rd eyelid is coming up because the eyeball is so small it won't stop it from coming up. Dr. said he is blind and will remain blind. Possible that he might be able to see shadows out of the eye that wasn't as bad. Not genetic...Just a flukey birth defect.
