Finally, I can show you!

After losing my 2 pregnant does to a dog attack over a month ago, I knew I had to "mitigate my losses" and rebuild my herd, so I started checking CL for bred Nubians. Not only did I check the local listings, but also checked the area where we bought our other doe (the older one lost in the attack) in January. I'm so glad I did, because I ran across these three - all registered - and just couldn't pass them up. I had wanted to show all of you earlier (we drove to the OBX to pick them up on December 2, 2012), but the boards wouldn't let me post photos until last night.

The first photo is of Nicole and one of her twin doelings from this year, Honeysuckle. Nicole was bred two days after arriving here, so she's due in May 2013. The second is of Happy Jack, the buck that came with them (he's unrelated to either of them). They were all a bit on the thin side when they got here (the previous owners had been feeding whole corn and hay), but are putting on weight nicely in our rich pastures. They also get hay, alfalfa pellets (occasionally) and have a DuMor mineral block, and free-choice loose minerals and baking soda.

Thanks everyone. I always swore I would *never* have a buck (I've just read far too many horror stories), but Jack was a bottle baby and is absolutely the sweetest thing. It doesn't mean I'll turn my back on him when he's in full rut, but right now he loves attention and is actually much friendlier than either of the new girls. He's out of the Longman lines, and I'm sure he'll make some gorgeous babies.

A couple more - one of Honeysuckle and my LM doe, Blossom. The other is of the whole crew (minus Blossom because she came through the fence into the backyard) grazing in the pasture behind the house.

congrats... so happy you found them... (I really like the way the black doe's ear's frame her face)... NOT to say it can't happen.... BUT>... we have yet to ever had a nubian buck with the slightest hint of mean... ALL of them have been bottle babies.. even in full rut, they are all just super sweet guys (who can't figure out why we don't want to kiss them on their pee covered lips LOL) I looked thru your pedigrees when you posted them... you have some really nice, bloodlines.. I think you'll have lots of milk & nice babies...

The doe in front in the last photo is Dora, my 4-year-old Nubian doe. If you look closely, you can see that part of her right ear is missing; it's the part the vet had to remove after the attack. Luckily - knock on wood - we haven't seen any signs that the stress of the attack made her abort/absorb.

I am just so pleased for you!

The only problem I imagine you'll have when that gorgeous boy comes into rut is that he won't understand why you don't want him to come running for a hug and a scritch. Poor Mac wants only for me to let him walk with his head under my arm, but darnit! He is the foulest smelling buck! Even seasoned goat in the area say that Mac is the stankiest buck they've ever smelled.

Your new gals are gorgeous, your buck is stunning, and I'm happy for you!

They only have the pastures for another three months, and then we'll be moving to the mountains. They'll have to switch over to browse mode there, but I'm sure they'll do just fine
