Misinformation Or Am I Ignorant?
DH and I had a booth at a local Christmas craft bazaar yesterday. We sell our GM soaps and lotions. We don't make a ton of money doing it, but it helps out with the feed bill for the herd. There is one other lady locally who also sells GM soaps and lotions. She has been doing this for about 4 years. She has a couple of nice Saanen does that she milks, and she has nice products. She was also at the bazaar yesterday. We were chatting, and she asked if we had any does in milk right now. I told her that we didn't. Our girls are bred and dried off for now, but I have a nice supply of milk frozen for soaping. She commented that she wished she had milk in the freezer as her girls are also bred and not milking right now. She said that she did have one friend who had a doe in milk who had shared some milk with her to make products. The friend's doe, according to her, was an ADGA registered pygmy. Huh? DH and I both asked if she said "pygmy." "Yes. They're recognized as dairy goats by the ADGA. My friend gets about 2 quarts a day from hers." Now, I was trying to be diplomatic, and I didn't comment other than, "Well, what do you know about that." I didn't want to be offensive, and I try to recognize that I'm the newbie around here in the soap and goat business. But, she's wrong, isn't she? She was so sure of herself, but I really wanted to correct her right there.

That's what I was thinking, and I told her that our herd was primarily Nigerian (with one Lamancha thrown in there), and I knew that they were recognized by ADGA.

Pygmies are meat goats NOT dairy. I would be skeptical about 2QTs a day from a Pygmy.

Sounds like someone else was either ignorant or just said the wrong breed.
The Boer/Nub crosses give a half gal pr day. (plenty for us)

Perhaps it was a Nigerian. I think that AGS might register pygmies though, maybe it was registered there?

I'm really thinking she was talking about ND's, but she insisted that this goat was a pygmy. She seemed very interested in educating us about the various breeds listed with ADGA - "Saanen, Alpine, Nubian, Toggenburg, Oberhalsi, Lamancha, Nigerian Dwarf, and Pygmy."

Nope. She is completely wrong.
Heck, you can go to their website and it tells you what breeds they register, and Pygmies are NOT on the list.
(Copied from their "Breed Standards" page) "ADGA currently has herd books for the following breeds of dairy goats: Alpine, LaMancha, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, Oberhasli, Saanen, Sable and Toggenburg."

She was wrong, Pygmies have always been a meat breed. I bet she meant to say AGS & not ADGA.

AGS *does* register Pygmies, as well as all of the breeds that ADGA resisters.
She likely meant AGS.
