Preemies, struggles, tubing video
I posted about this on the "tis the season" thread.
We had preemie NDs born last night. My DS15 found them about midnight. We were up until 3. We had to submerge their bodies in HOT water to get their body temps above 100 so that we could feed them. One nursed the Pritchard nipple but I had to tube the other so I decided to make a "how-to" video. I have tubed many, many baby goats and calves over the last 20+ years.
I hope this helps some of you that may be nervous about this process. It is an ESSENTIAL skill!!

They are both maintaining a 100+ temp this morning and have been fed again. They are resting and doing well.

I saw that video on the other thread and think it is great to actually see it done. Thanks for doing that! Those babies are adorable! I'm so happy they are doing good

Great video... I know tubing can be a scary idea....but it truly is one of the most important *need-to-know-hows*.. for anyone who is going to breed...also a weak kid syringe is NOT something you want to NEED, not have in your kidding supplies and then have to go driving around, trying to find some place that carries them... I have taught so many goat and sheep folks how to tube feed over the years...usually in the middle of the night...after answering a frantic phone call ...which ends in them bringing the kid/kids to my house, since they NEVER have a tubing kit of their own...I now buy extras to have on hand to give away...think I bought 9 or 10 extra last spring...(without tubing wintrwolf would not have Pebbles...she was a non-suck reflex girl...tubed her every 4hours for almost 2weeks!!!)
Good luck with the preemies Gena

Oh wow, they are pretty tiny! I didn't realize their size until I saw the foot in the second picture. I hope they do well for you. Going to watch the video now.

My computer is spazzing out, so I didn't see the end of the video, but wanted to say, for people who have never tubed an animal and are nervous, some other ways to be sure you are in the right place (the esophagus), the baby should not be coughing, and you can try dribbling in a little bit of water first and check for a gag. If you weren't feeling for the tube to slide past your hand, you could still feel for "two tubes" in the neck, one will be the trachea, one the feeding tube. I measure the tube against the baby (on the outside) to about the last rib; that's where you want it to go...you can mark the tube. Some kind of lubricant on the tube is nice to help it slide smoothly. The video probably had this, but just in case, after you are done, crimp the tube and pull out slow and steady to make sure that nothing splashes and causes aspiration....milk/colostrum is a good medium for bacteria growth.

Someone asked about size. The gold/white one is 2.1# and the one with the white poll is 1#. We have had a 1.25# girl born and survive before. This little guy had a VERY rough start. He was 93* when I got a hold of him.

Glad they are doing well Gena!
We had one last year that wasn't a premie, thankfully, but VERY small. She weighted in at 1# 10oz. 1st pic was the night she was born, next 2 she was 2 days old. Her mouth was swished or something when she was born but she is fine now.

Just want to add...it's really a lot more friendly to have naso-gastric tubes on hand. They can be left in place until the kid can eat enough on it's own--they can still suck and swallow with an NG tube--to avoid the trauma of frequent reinsertion. It's also nice because the kids don't fight it much like they do an oral-gastric tube. A size 5 or 6 french tube should be small enough for all kids. Up to a size 10 french is probably ok for full-sized kids. They can be ordered from vet or medical supply companies.

The little guys are doing so well! This A.M. the one we've been tubing, nursed an ounce from the bottle! He's been sucking all along, he just didn't have enough "umph" to get that colostrum through that Pritchard nipple. Their tone is great. They are in a tote right next to the woodstove. Cozy.
I will update pics in a bit. It's Monday morning and "work" is calling my name. I am so glad I work at home though!

Thanks for posting the video. I tubed a sheep about 12 years ago and that was my only experience. I will be having my first kidding in march, and thanks to the pregnancy/kidding thread I have a list of essentials I will collect!
I hope these two kids make it. They are just adoreable.

He's standing up all by himself today too! He's doing super! He's taken the bottle over and over today.
Oh, and there's workings in the background but "Tube Boy" has a name, Ozzy (or Azi, whichever you prefer) And he's going to a special home as a "therapeutic goat" after I am 100% sure that he's rock-solid good...

I posted it on the "tis the season" thread because they said they were going to make it a sticky. I'm glad it helped. I wish I had had a video when I started. Anything I can do to help...
