Treating mastitis?

I think Pixie may have mastitis on one side. The milk looks normal but upon closer examination it has little tiny clumps in it. That side also feels former than the other and seems to have less milk even though it's the same size.

Is there anything I can get at tractor supply for this?

No you need to have it cultured to find out what will treat it. Different bacteria respond to different antibiotics. There is a sticky about sending milk in for culturing.

Mastitis isn't something I like to mess with. So it depends on the level of SCC's (somatic cell count) they have. I have SCC tests and if they show positive I take a sample and send it off. I don't wait for results though. If their levels are low I start them on MastoBlast and some herbs and hope they can work it out themselves. I also milk frequently and massage with Dynamint or something to that effect. If their SCC's are high I start them on Naxcel along with the rest.

You can get some Today from TSC and some antibiotics. I'm not a pro with the feed store antibiotics. I would call your vet and see what they say. I would definitely get a sample sent off though. Your vet may do it too.

I forgot to add that when I get the results if the resistance test shows that Naxcel won't kill it I switch antibiotics. It usually takes me around 5 days to get results so I start meds because it can get bad in 5 days if left untreated.

It wouldn't hurt to give her a shot of Bo Se and make sure she's milked exactly on time.

I read an article once on dairy cows where with some forms of mastitis giving them selenium and Vit E and milking 3x worked as well as some antibiotics.
CaliannG and KrisD like this.
