Goats visit nursing home
Dan got out of the rehab center/nursing home about 1:00, and we went back with the goats at 4:00.
It was a HUGE success. I just brought two, Cassie the MiniMancha, who is HUGELY pregnant and due in February, and the one I'm milking right now, Aster, the Saanen/Alpine. I even brought a bucket and milked her a little. I felt like a magician pouring the milk from the bucket into a glass! We brought crackers for the residents to feed the goats, too.
LOTS of older folks are familiar with dairy animals, so we had a lively discussion.
If the pictures load correctly, the first one is Aster and Truman. Aster didn't like the halter, so that's why she looks unhappy. Truman is about 90 years old, and we had bought rabbits from him about thirty years ago. His daughter, who is my age, drives the school bus on the route that goes in front of our house.
The residents are looking forward to spring kidding.

The multi is Cassie, the MiniMancha who had FIVE bucklings the last time she kidded! The residents were guessing how many she's going to have in February.
She is bred to a black and white spotted MiniMancha buck, so I think we will get color.

That probably meant so much to them. Did they ask you back?

I'm picturing a lot of backflips off of wheelchairs. That should be fun. It's too bad you don't bottle feed. I bet the residents would get a kick out of that.

that is really cool! Probably as fun as taking in dogs, but I bet it gets a livlier conversation then dogs would.
My mom works in a nursing home that has a few people that bring in dogs. I should mention this to her, maybe they can look for someone with goats.

If Cassie has as many as she's looking like, I'll be bottle feeding quints again. She's huge, and she's not due till February.

What a wonderful thing to do. If I ever get stuck in a nursing home, I can only hope someone will do this for me.
