Dog Attack - My Story

Not posting for sympathy, but rather to promote awareness. This is my story. It happened on November 20, 2012, and I never want anyone to have to go through this horrific experience; hence the reason I reached out to the media.

Fluvanna Farm Owner Speaks Out after Dogs Attack her Livestock

What people need to understand is that it's not only the financial burden something like this creates, but the psychological and emotional scars it leaves, as well. I'm still scared to go to the barn alone (I had a breakdown on the way there the day after), find myself crying at random times, can't sleep and, when I do, have nightmares. I am on edge and feel scared all the time. I spoke out to the media because I refuse to let my girls' deaths be in vain, and I want people to wake up, take responsibility and keep their dogs where they belong - on their own property!

How horrific. I'm so sorry. I don't know how I'd cope in your place. {{hugs}}

I am so sorry for your loss. Dogs running loose are 1 of my biggest fears but would have no problem shooting dogs attacking my livestock.
Give your girls a big Hug from me. Maybe think about getting a guardian livestock dog to keep with them. So sad anyone has to go through this though.

I am so sorry that you and your hubby and your goats had to endure this. And you are right when you say it was senseless..it was. When we moved here, we had to build a fence the entire length along the road..why?..to keep the neighbor dogs out of our yard and chickens. Mentioned to them several times that they were bothering us..just didn't sink in to them.

We are HARD on our dogs. If they even look at the gate (when opened) they are in trouble. If they pass through it..all heck breaks loose on them. We won't stand for our dogs to be roaming or looking around.

But we have learned that we cannot depend on other people to keep their dogs where they belong.

I am sorry for the loss of your goats and the loss of the dogs. It's the dog owners that I'd like to shake.

Praying that your goat girls and you and your hubby heal quickly.

Oh my. I am SO sorry. I know how scared I get for my boys when I hear the coyotes howl or the panther call. It is creepy and scary when I go out by myself at 3 in the morning.

I am glad that the dogs are gone - at least you do not have to worry about them. This is why I am seriously thinking about getting a mule to put with my boys.

~hugs~ So sorry to hear about this! How horrific for you!

I have an LGD for this reason. Many of my neighbors allow their dogs to roam, and even the friendly ones will chase the goats if they are allowed. They can be as devious about getting INTO fences as the goats are about getting OUT of them.

I would have been in your shoes numerous times if it wasn't for my LGD.

~hugs again~ No one should have to deal with that.

I'm so sorry, I too have been in your shoes concerning neighbors dogs attacking my kids back in 2001 or 2002 .My goats were where they belonged and the dogs weren't..Me and several neighbors that had lost animals to these three dogs, my goats were my KIDS and I love them more then life its self and animal control took the dogs owner's to court and the Judge ordered the owners to pay damages and the dogs were ordered to be put down..I then at that time purchased cattle panels to enclose all my goats lots with. Bottom line for me is my kids must be safe so they don't have to endear the results of other people not showing responsibility and just let their dogs run free.

Trish, I just saw your post on the Virginia Farm FB page a hour ago. There are no words to express how sorry I am. A similar incident happened recently about 30 minutes from here where 13 alpacas were mauled to death by two neighbor dogs. Horrifying and absolutely senseless.

I wish I could hear honestly from people who let their dogs run loose. Not one of those smarmy "I know my dog would never hurt anything" remarks or the convenient "my dogs never leave my place" remarks but the honest reason why it is more imporant to them not to be inconvenienced by keeping their dogs at home and having to clean up and exercise them than it is to keep them from terrorizing other pets and stock.
Unfortunately I really already know the truth- my next door neighbor lets her dogs loose even though she has been repeatedly told by others around of the danger to the dogs, one of whom is all of 8 inches high. When one of her dogs got killed by a car, she responded "stupid dog."
Are such people a different species of human?
I'm so sorry for you loss and trauma. And good for you for doing something.

I am so sorry that you had to go through all that! I read the comments on the news article and just wanted to tell you one more time that you have no reason to have to defend your actions to stupid people. People like that will not listen to reason, anything that you say that is against their thinking will just be in one ear and out the other.

I've learned to just take it all in stride, as far as the comments about us being "evil." Those people weren't here and didn't see what I saw, nor do they feel the absolute fear and anguish I feel every time I walk down to my barn now. They aren't the ones left with trying to pick up the pieces. I just wish the owners had done the mature and RIGHT thing by coming over here, apologizing and finding out how they could make things right. I'm sure they don't know - or care - that I've cried for their dogs almost as much as I have for my goats. Those dogs were innocents in all of this - the owners are completely to blame for the 6 deaths that occurred that day...

Very, VERY true!

There is no such thing as bad animals....just bad owners.

Before we had goats, we had Shetland sheep. Christmas Eve 2000, five -- that's FIVE -- dogs got into our barn by going over the pasture fence and the corral fence. We had only four sheep at the time and lost all of them. The dogs were skinny strays and had eaten the hind quarter out of one wether. Hubs had to shoot one that wasn't yet dead. We held four of the five dogs in our barn until animal control got there (one had jumped the fence and fled upon initial discovery). No one claimed any of the dogs so all four were euthanized.

The following spring, we got our first Great Pyrenees. We have not been without at least 3 LGDs ever since and we've never lost another critter.

So many of these city folk move to the country so their dogs can "roam free" -- like it's something beautiful. These idiots just don't get how dangerous that is for their dogs, much less livestock. So many people these days are hung up on ascribing human traits to their dogs. They don't seem to have a clue that chasing and killing livestock is a totally natural behavior for their "fur children". Arghhh. This has been going on for as long as I can remember.
