Brought the 7 yr old doe home...

BamBam gets to be herd buck and I brought the 7 yr old doe home. (loading pics on photobucket now) heres the thing I thought she was big until I got her here and wow made me realize that Pawnee has grown allot and she is only 2 going on 3 years old. AND I can't believe I didn't see it before but the doe has a HUGE lump right above her knee!!! She is in definite need of groceries (also pulling out the replamin for her) very mineral deficient. Did find out that their worming basically involved collodion silver???? She has hair loss along spine and some on head and she has flakey skin, she keeps rubbing her head on me...I checked her for lice which she doesn't have. Her registration papers state she is polled so that's a plus.
Her registered name is THE CMFC HEIDI RED COLLI DAVIS...thinking of just calling her Heidi

I hope you are keeping her separate? The swelling could be from a bite...

I have to laugh because you don't have pictures with her head up. She is digging that grass! She looks like a pretty girl. You'll have her looking like a super model in no time.

Is her bump squishy like an abscess or harder? Loretta banged her leg when we brought her home and her leg looked just like that. You could try icing it and see if that helps.

I think she looks nice. She is putting on winter hair. In the last picture her hair is even shining in the sun.

The place she came from is completely wooded, no grass in the goat area. Though she did the same thing with the hay...wasn't sure if she was gonna ever come up for air.
Yes she has been moved to a separate pen after I found the lump bump. Just in case.
She seems to like me, and she loves to itch her head on me...she is still drying off so her body condition is in part due to being in milk.
I had never thought that I might actually have a polled Nubian so it was a surprise to read it on her papers.
Hey Nancy yeah I think that she was shining well in the sun, but she has some mangy looking area's on her just thinking its lack of mineral's they told me they have been feeding 12% all stock feed, so am betting she is copper deficient.

The Replamin will probably bring her around in no time as well as some good hay & feed. I would start her out with 2 doses of Replamin the 1st week, 1 day apart then just weekly.

I bet she has a picker or a bite of some kind on the front of her leg.
I also really like the name Heidi.

Is the lump hot? Could it be an infection?
I love oberhaslis. You will be able to get at least 1-2 kids from her in her life span.

Well I have had Miss Heidi for 24 hours now. Got home from work this evening after her getting to graze as much as she wanted in the little area and all the hay she wanted she has already started to fill out, did notice she was standing funny like her front legs were hurting her a little...drug my mum out with me to hold her and took a good look at her front hooves UGH! Funny they weren't really overgrown but after I cleaned out the muck I was really surprised to see rot??? So I trimmed down to clean white was afraid to take to much...brushed with some iodine.
The bump on her leg is same size so I will watch and if no change will aspirate on Friday and then wrap it.
Gave her a dose of replemin plus OMG she sucked it off the spoon and almost didn't give me the spoon back, then licking her lips and moaning for more...
Did have my mum top dress her serving of morning feed with some probios.
Can't wait for her hair to grown back

Lump isn't hot. Its not hard as a rock. Middle is firm with fluid around it is about how I would describe it. I could find no "wound" so it maybe one of those things I will never know.

My hands stink from her hooves must go wash now

Any abscess on my farm would be cause for immediate isolation. Depending on the animal, it would lead to either immediate euthanasia with taking an aspirate sample to send for culture (To assess risk to herdmates it was exposed to), or would at least be isolated until aspirate results come back.

Any abscess is too risky. I agree it's not in a common place for CL, but it doesn't always follow the rules. A culture is not so expensive that it isn't definetely 'worth it'.

No worries she is separated in the old buck area, it has shelter and a little grazing area and if need be I can burn everything in there.
mygoat likes this.
