CL vaccine update - TVL phone call
Just called because I hadn't gotten a reply to my email. The man was VERY friendly that I talked to! Super eager to answer any questions.
Turns out, he can't publish yet. Studies will be published no earlier than 6 months from now - something to do with being a conditionally licensed product, FDA... somethin' like that.
Studies have been done in 900 head herd of boer/boer crosses.
Efficacy was 75% (sucessful in producing effective protection in 75% of goats - pretty darn good for a bacterial vaccine!)
NO adverse reactions like seen with the sheep vaccine, except at the injection site, resolved in 2-3 weeks. Keep in mind knots are common at injection sites with CDT, too.
I'm impressed, overall. Sounds like a great vaccine.

I wonder if you were on the phone with him just before I called. When I said I had a question about the vaccine, he said "oh boy", then asked to put me on hold for a moment.
I got the same impression too, very helpful.

It's about time some of these companies started coming out with things specific to goats. Looking forward to hearing & learning more about this vaccine as time goes.

If the industry was more serious and profit generating, maybe they would. Partially us raisers' fault, but mostly the status at which goats are considered by the US. (We raise cows because we raise cows kinda mentality).

We (USA) raise cows because they are easier to raise on a large scale than goats. And we are all about big and as much production as possible. Fencing cattle in is cheaper than goats. Shelter and predators are a smaller issue with cattle. Also, when working a herd, having fewer animals for the same amount of product is less labor. Plus, you can handle cow's milk roughly and haul it around the country and it will still taste good.
But goats are still superior because they don't splash feces and urine around the barn or break your ribs etc And they have more personality.

I actually disagree that goats would be harder to raise large scale. With proper equipment and know how, I bet it would be easier. Then again, I can see how getting the proper equipment and know-how IS 'harder' attain with goats than it is cows. Fencing I agree would be more expensive potentially. As for handling milk - pasteurized goat's milk can be handled roughly just fine, I've found. I shake mine violently whenever I pour a glass, to get the cream back in. No taste issues for weeks.
While cows produce more per animal, goats are more efficient in production. They'd be even better if they were concentrated upon industry-wide like the dairy cow has been the past 50 years or so.
But for a long time, our country WAS good for raising cows I admit. Open ranges and what have you... and we now are 'stuck' on cows and are stubbornly trying to cram more of these big animals in smaller places.

If I could get it here I would try it on my herd. I may have to start bugging the state veterinarian...

Kris, we are in the same boat here in WI. I e--mailed the state vet and he said he hasn't recieved the 'conditional use' request ffrom Texas Vet Labs yet. I called TVL and the guy in charge of this did call me back and leave a message, but due to my work schedule this week I haven't been able to catch him yet.
Do be proactive and call your state vet, it will be a start for you. Good luck!

I have some on the way. I'm trying on my barren doe first to see how it goes. If all goes well I will vax the rest of the herd. I am repeating my annual CL, CAE, Johnes testing before the CL vaccine gets here. I will probably retest that doe for CL in a month or two to see what the test shows. I'll keep you all posted. I figure someone has to be a guinea pig and it might as well be a doe that is useless to us even if I love her.
