Buck question!! **Pictures Added**

We went ahead a bought in a buckling, 8 months old, to try and get our does bred. I bought him so he is probably here to stay for awhile lmao plus he came with his papers. Anyways our other buckling is still here but we are undecided on keeping him around or not. Hes 5 months old now, and this may sound really weird, but I got looking at him and decided to have a "feel around" his scrotum, and believe it or not, he has no testicles Could they have not dropped? Could this breeder have totally screwed us over, not only with his papers but knowing this too? I never even thought to touch him in that area lol....is there any chance they are just stuck somewhere else?? I have no idea what to think of this....

On a funny note...I have never owned a buck before.....this guy has me almost crying in laughter everytime I go down to the barn. He's a bottle baby so he is super friendly and stuck up your butt! But...he has claimed me as "his"....he's peed on me already and he blubbers at me the whole time I'm down there! It cracks me up. I just look at him, tell him he's wooing the wrong girl and point him in the right direction, and go figure he goes over to my wether, whom is not thrilled I hope this boy figures it all out LOL
Sherry in Iowa likes this.

If he buckling is truly a buckling, you will SEE his jewels really easily.

Now, he may be a wether, or he may be crypto (which also will never breed), but if you are feeling nothing there, he is NOT a buck.

You can see and feel the family jewels on a newborn.

Don't feel bad. I once bought a "buck" that was actually a burdizzoed wether. ~sighs~

I just don't understand because this guy is like "oh when he matures I would like to have him come back here to breed a couple of my does" blah blah blah ......but this 8 month old was the reason I had a feel around....his are HUGE....and the 5 month olds still look like they would on a newborn....but I really don't feel testicles, maybe there was just one there I'll have to feel again, but I guess if there are none he will have to be sent down the road, unfortunately, he is such a good looking sweet boy

I am having an aweful run of bad luck on the goats

I can't believe I am asking this but can you post a picture? (This makes me think of the thread about modesty....oh my) Has the 5 month old ever acted like a buck? I can't tell by the last portion of your post if you where talking about your new 8 month old or your 5 month old.

Yup, a 5 mo old's testicles are unmistakably visible. We had a 5 mo old who got one of the does.
Can you go back to the breeder & show her what he doesnt have?

Is it possible he is a hermie? I would think even if his testicles never descended he would still have the testosterone and would act very bucky, either that or he was burdizzoed (is that how you would say it?)

There is no way of going back to the breeder.....he will not return my text messages or voicemails I have left, or fb messages as I have found him on facebook also. Really not happy about the situation. I don't understand why he would sell me a castrated buck then ask me to bring him back so he could use him? Guess people have done crazier things LOL

I will get pics this morning and post them this afternoon. Also going to have another feel around

Aw gee Boermomma. You really didn't need this, did you? I would say, based on the fact that you can't find anything, and that the guy who sold it won't get back to ya..the news ain't good.

Pick any breed of animal..go to their forum and you will find similar situations. Sorry to say that there are people that do not care how they treat their animals or their buyers.

Now if that happened where I live(d), the goat would be back in the truck, along with several good sized friends o mine. The goat would be delivered and the money retrieved. Good luck.

Start writing down everything! Take pictures and get documentation. Write down date and times of every time you try and contact him. send him a registered letter so he knows you mean business. If he's papered call the registry and file a complaint. THEN take him to small claims court if he doesn't refund your money. There is no reason to get screwed on this. Don't let this guy pull a fast one and get away with it. You can't afford to keep buying bucks and getting screwed.

So they are normal size? I really want to apologize for all of my stupid questions, I am new to goats, and have never owned a buck so I really don't know. I just started to assume he was "underdeveloped" or something....I did not feel anything yesterday, and this morning they were sort of tucked up..

There are no stupid question. They look totally normal. When they get cold they pull them up a bit towards their belly to keep them warm. It's a like shrinkage you won't learn if you don't ask.

They look on the small side to me. And I'll be perectly up front about this guy; in my personal opinion he's not buck material. I just dont like his stance his demeanor or his rump. He's not proud. Does he usually stand with his tail tucked like that in the first pic?
eta pics 4 & 5.

On the other hand your 8m old though 3 mo difference is clearly a he-man.

No, that is not a normal "package". He looks like the "buck" that I had that had been castrated via burdizzo. Very small testes.

There are other things that can cause the testicles to stop growing, or to shrink...but ALL of the things that cause that also cause sterility.

It could be that the seller didn't know. Didn't you say that he was a dealer, rather than a breeder? I know the person who sold me my "buck" was completely clueless, she even borrowed him back to breed to a couple of her does the next fall, and had a friend of hers call me to borrow him. So it was two of us that that didn't know.

Sorry I thought you were talking about the 8 month old. I guess I was confused with the discussion going back and forth.

Goldenwood farm wanted pics of the 5 month old.....so I did a comparison of the 5 month old and the 8 month old.....so he isn't normal? LOL

GoatServant, this was him when we first got him in September
Buck question!! - Goats

He got bullied pretty bad by our nubian/oberhasli doe, whom is no longer here, so I'm not sure if she traumatized him....but he used to walk with his tail up.

What do you mean by "he-man?" Is that good or bad? lmao

CaliannG....this buck we got from an actual breeder who I believe is a member of the ABGA.....the one doe we had(with the suspected CL) was the one from the dealer....and finally got a call from the vet today, she had a very high positive for it :/ guess it's a good thing we culled her when she started developing another lump last week

Then DO call the breeder more, and do other things. If he isn't wethered, he's a crypto. A *responsible* breeder will either refund your money, or give you a replacement. While cryptos are *necessarily* the breeder's fault (just like hermies aren't), still, the breeder sold you a goat as breeding stock, and he isn't.

The proper thing for the breeder to do is offer you a refund or a replacement.
