She is an Alpine x!
I puzzled over a thread about genetics that said along with the polled gene, the white saanen colour was dominant. When I got Salma, my pure white 'Saanen' doe, she had her buckling kid with her and he had Alpine markings - black with white face stripes.
We went to the Saanen goat herd where she came from last week, to pick some new kids out. I'm getting a huge cuddly doeling called Baby - she looks like a bear compared to Willow- and 3 bucklings for kai. Looking at the herd, I mused that Salma is more delicately built than all their other goats. And then knock me down, amongst all the hefty Saanen lasses, I saw a lone dainty Alpine girl. The owner pointed at her and said 'she is the mother of the doe you bought'.
Aha! Explains the dainty features and more petite frame. At any rate, its a very nice cross
So now I know Salma's pure white doeling, Willow is 3/4 Saanen and 1/4 alpine. Not that it matters THAT much for a backyard milker, but it solves the mystery of the Alpine kid!
