Gretta

Ok I am getting very worried for Michelle and her. Has anyone heard anything? I know they are both exhausted.

Michelle was on yesterday afternoon. If memory serves, there has been some response to the medicine, but Gretta isn't nearly out of the woods yet. Still waiting on word of the test results. ~sighs~ Still hoping Gretta gets "fixed up".

I also talked to her last night & she was exausted, going to take a shower & try & get some sleep. Gretta was doing about the same, not any worse but not real good yet either. I think this is all very over whelming to her & she's trying to keep on top of all of it.

Hi guys! Thanks for thinking about us. No improvement on Gretta but she is eating and getting around. It's raining here so they are all stuck inside. I put Gretta in the stall with plenty of alfalfa and oats. I feel she is safer in there and she can still see everyone. She is so unstable it's scary. I just wish she would get better

I wish I lived closer to you Minelson I would come over and give you a break and just help out. I am still praying for you guys! I can't imagine if Basil had been down as long as poor Gretta, I would be a basket case (heck I practically was one with him!).

((((((hugs))))))

I'm sure this was discussed and tested before, but have you checked her for coccidia? My girl that was down last winter was VERY unstable and if she got knocked down she couldn't get up. I'm sure you've already tested for this, but just in case I thought I better throw it out there . I just know all of your TLC is going to get her better!

Gretta is a little worse right now. she has lost more strength and having a hard time getting around. I have a different vet coming tomorrow at 8:30 to give another opinion. It may be the end

Well let's hope something works or the new vet has another idea of what could be going on.

I don't think I've ever heard of a goat still hanging around like Gretta. Most goats get sick and die (at least the ones I've had). Gretta is still with you because she WANTS to be and she knows you are doing everything you know to do for her. It doesn't sound like she is in obvious pain....just seems to be "off". When and if the pain comes you will know the right thing to do. Until then, just comfort her..hang out with her...and continue to do your best for her.

My 9 year old dog passed away last week. She was sick for quite some time but I never felt like she was so miserable that I needed to put her down. It wasn't until the last couple of hours of her life that I wish my DH was home. I would have let him put her down because I knew then that she was suffering. I drugged her up with everything I had and more than likely put her into an unconcious state of being and then she passed away. I KNEW it was time for her to go. It's not time to make that decision for Gretta until you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that she is suffering. Hang in there. You and Gretta are in my thoughts

Prayers for you & Gretta still going. This is so hard, especially not seeing signficant improvement. We all know that you will do what's best for her. If the time comes to let her go may you have the strength.
We love you both. Spend time with her, it may sound bizarre but ask her what she wants, she will let you know.

You know we are thinking of you! And praying, and meditating, and hoping.

~ponders~ A weird thought just occurred to me. My mom had a *weird* infection go throught her chicken flock. It attacked the eyes, and she went through EVERYTHING trying to cure it. Our vet was at her wits end as well. Nothing seemed to touch this stuff, and my mother's favorite show birds were being blinded.

Finally, our vet had the University professors come out to look at my Mom's flock. They had never seen anything like it either, and took lots of samples and such.

Two days later, one of the professors e-mailed my Mom and our vet (Cc'ed). They had cultured the samples, couldn't figure out what it was, so had put it out on, I guess, the World Wide Poultry Professor's Forum or something, and a Poultry professor from Japan got in touch with them. Told them what it was, and how to treat it.

And the weird thing was? The treatment was a rather common, but prescription antibiotic that no one thought to try on them because it was an antibiotic mainly used for respiratory infections in mammals.

Maybe this new vet will know what is wrong. Or will know someone that can figure out what is wrong.

As long as Gretta isn't in *pain*, then there is time to try anything and everything under the sun to get her well again.

Ok maybe it was just a meltdown moment on my part. It is just so hard to know. I think this has gone neurological and she doesn't know where her feet are. Could be swelling on the spine that anti inflamatories would address. It could be a belly full of cancer. Or an abcess on the liver like Shygal said. Or some kind of nutritional uptake problem. weird worm. Ear infection. The list goes on and on. All are very legit possiblities and I am trying to address them all. Not by medicating...just checking them out. One might be a BINGO! along with an easy fix.
I do think she is a fighter. I'm surprised she goes out and about in such a wobbly condition. Maybe I don't know what old goat looks like and I'm way off course! But her blood tests and the anemia are sure signs that something is wrong...no matter how old you are.

Minelson - my thoughts and prayers have been with you and Gretta.

This may have been addressed - I've read all, but know so many things have been tossed out there, and I couldn't remember...

Could it be meningeal worm? That can cause paralysis of the back legs, and weakness... I know it's a long slow healing with that if the worming meds did take care of it
