LGD was poisoned....

I have not been here to post much lately, amoung normal life with a baby, my desk top won't open the new internet I have and the cell phone internet can be annoying, and then last Monday night I had a prowler, then the next morning my LGD refused his food (nothing new) but then that night he refused again. Wednesday he was vomiting. Vet said poisoned but without expensive test would be about impossible to find out what. We shoved lots of pepto down him and tried to keep him hydrated. By Thursday night he could not even lift his head. I cried several times which surprises me because he is an outside livestock dog. Well, Friday morning he was lifting up his head and sitting up occasionally. Friday night he was pouncing on the hubby. He has now been healthy for a week now.
It was not rat poison... no bleeding. His heart was pounding but that could be from the dehydration. Vet thinks maybe anti freeze. No proof it was deliberate, but with a prowler that night its too coincidental in my book. I had a small boer buckling come up missing a few months ago but I don't think its related.

The advertisement that came up below your post is for a pistol. Hmmmmm.

Glad your dog is recovered. There have been several dog poisonings here in southern Missouri recently.

OMG, I'm so sorry for your guy--and so glad he recovered. Some people are vermin.

Oh, I am so glad your dog is okay! People amaze me - how awful!

I would wonder about the motivation behind poisoning a livestock guardian dog.... It could be just cruelty, or it could be that he stopped the prowler from taking some animals and they want him out of the way when they come back....

Glad your boy is better..he definitely has someone worried. Our guard dog is 14..he still puts fright in people .. because he has a reputation. We have been blessed that people have left us alone..I give him the credit for doing his job well. I have a fear of when he passes..he is a momma's boy and I have always felt safe with him out there doing his job.

Again, I am so happy to hear that your boy is doing so well. One of those "movement" lights might catch someone by surprised and keep them off the place too.

WOw. YOu really are having a problem! We once had a german shepherd mix who went over the the neighbors and licked all the rose dust off of the leaves the guy had sprinkled on for pest control. I don't know why she liked it, but she got a pretty lethad dose and poisoned herself good! By the the time we got her to a vet, there was little he could do. He did say though, that if she came around and started eating to offer browned hamburger (drained of oil) mixed with rice. It works well to clean out their system. She recovered. Glad you dog did too. and yes, I'd suspect foul play.

~hugs~ How terrible!

Long ago, we had a pair of Belgian Shepherds, Malatios. The male was goofy, friendly, and sweet. The female would only allow family on the property, PERIOD. We had "Beware of the Dog" posters all over. She never went outside of our property, even if the gate was open, but only the people she knew belonged there were allowed INSIDE the fence line.

A couple of people who attempted to prowl inside the fence at night got bit for their troubles. With one, a piece of his jeans and a piece of his undershorts were left behind.

About a month later, I found the male, the goofy, friendly, loves everyone guy, dead. He has been poisoned. Even found what was left of the piece of chicken. SHE, of course, being protective and suspicious, never once touched it.

~sighs~ Criminals are horrible. The ONLY reason to poison a dog is because the person wants the freedom to do harm on the place, either through violence or theft. Sadistic, cruel people don't go for poison; it is too quick and painless.

I am so sorry your dog got sick. I like the light suggestion. Also, you might get some meat pieces, like burger, chicken pieces, etc., and put inside them (Not on the outside, but inside where the dog cannot readily smell it) something nasty tasting, but harmless, and get people your dog doesn't know to toss them into your yard. It will teach your dog not to take candy from strangers.

Great post, Caliann! And great idea on the nasty item in the meat! you are right about the reason. I was in a hurry this morning and didn't think out my post all of the way, other than wanting to warn the OP that I was concerned about the motive behind the poisoning. You phrased it very well!

I am so glad your dog is going to be OK but I would get a light & really be on the lookout for any strangers, cars, etc. I also would call the police & let them know what went on so at least they have a record of it.

Maybe make 1 of those sign's I've seen for the end of the driveway or along the fence that says "I keep a loaded gun & am not afraid to use it"!
