Gretta is having problems again
She is having trouble either chewing or swallowing again. I can't tell which. She can swallow. She eats her mash/soup like she is starving. Then stops and wipes her lips/mouth on the first hard object she can find. Then turns her nose to eating anything at all. I can tell she is frustrated. She is skin and bones...I know she doesn't look like it in pics and videos but if you could feel her you could tell. She will never make it through this winter in this condition.
I talked to the vet (one of several that I use) and gave him the run down. One thing that he brought up is Leukosis Leukemia. It affects the intestines and trachea with abcesses. Says I need to find someone with a scope to look inside..or at least an ultra sound. He said my best bet is a small animal clinic. So I need to find a small animal clinic that has this equipment that would work on a goat and know how to sedate one.
I'm very upset and worried about her. I have to cure this quickly before winter sets in! One of my co-workers, friends is close friends with the owner of a clinic that does have all the state of the art equipment for diagnosis on small and large animals. They were always large animal and just recently got into small animals too. I have asked them in the past if they "know" goats and they said no. So I'm having my friend call the owner and see if they can help. I feel that if I just called there and got the receptionist I would be turned away. So I'm trying to get her in through the back door to get a scope/ultrasound done. I'm just venting. sorry this is so long but it is so frustrating when you know something is wrong and it's like swimming up stream to get answers. I would move mountains for Gretta. I will travel if need be. I will do anything to get her the help she needs.
ETA: AND my dad is having heart surgery tomorrow in another state....valve replacement so I am a wreck over that. I wanted to go be with him but he doesn't want me there

I hope the clinic can get the scope and/or ultra sound done for you. That sounds like exactly what you need right now. At least then you can get a better idea of what's going on in Gretta's throat. I sure hope it's not tumors or cysts in there & it turns out to be something minor. I'll be praying for you & Gretta & let us know what you find out.

~warm, tight, hugs~ Oh hon! How frustrating and stressful for you, and how bad for Gretta! I am sorry she is not feeling well again!
If you can just get a vet that knows something about sheep, or even cows, it would help.
To make you feel better, and something you can tell the vet, if she has to go under, tell them to treat her as thought she was a Newfoundland Dog. Goats have about the same sensitivity to anesthesia as Newfoundlands, and it will give them a base point in dealing with her.
Have hope! Remember that my little Cypress went through major surgery, had to be put under and everything, and didn't even lose her kid! And my vet is NOT all that knowledgeable about goats. She didn't even know what a CL test WAS until I asked for one! However, she is an absolutely TERRIFIC surgeon!
And that is what you want. Someone who is a terrific anesthesiologist, and someone who is a terrific vet, even if they are not all that familiar with goats.
~hugs again!~

Well I would have my boss at the clinic do it then. He is an awesome surgeon. We don't have the equipment to do a scope or ultra sound. Jeepers...our Xray machine is a milllion years old. Plus I already asked him if he would take her on and he hesitated just long enough that he was uncomfortable about that. He hears me talking about goats all day long and I think he has learned a lot from me! But would never admit that. lol!! He is the greatest friend and boss

One thing about your boss..... there is no doubt that since it is for you, he would do his absolute very best. Which is about all you can ask for from anyone.
Get a way to get her scoped, and if there is surgery to be done, have him do it. You know for a fact that HE wouldn't doing a half------ed job on Gretta, no matter what.

I agree with Caliann. If you can get a scope or the ultra sound done somewhere & get copies or the pictures or report & take them to your boss that would probably be a lot of help for him.
He may be a little nervous to take care of Gretta though because he's never dealt with goats before & he knows how much you Love them & of course like you said he's a good friend besides just being your boss.

Oh, Minelson!
Huge hugs and prayers headed your way - for your dad and for Gretta! It is so frustrating and upsetting to be unable to "fix" things ourselves when the people and animals we love are not doing well!
We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers! Please keep us updated!

I put my hands all over Gretta tonight...it is shocking. She is hair and bone there is not a smidgen of fat or meat on her. Now I'm thinking some kind of wasting disease. This has come on very fast. I do try not to feel her intensely every day so I would be able to notice a difference. It's bad
My hubby gently brought me to the realization of some hard to swallow facts. What if Gretta wouldn't want to be put through all this testing. And that made me think of the Nuflor and there is no way in hell I would do that again I'm loosing my Gretta! I have some really hard choices to make and it sucks. I don't like giving up but she desreves to be comfortable and happy. I would move mountains for her but maybe that is not the best for her .

Minelson- So very sorry for all your trials now. I do hope enough information comes to light soon, so you can feel more comfortable about what to do next. Uncertainty is so distressing.

She wouldn't need to be put under for un ultrasound, would she?
Get some good facts about what you are dealing with here so you can make an informed decision.
More hugs from me.
