Goaties are the best!!

Wow! I jumped over to the bunny forum for the first time a few days ago to ask a treatment question.

Got some really helpful advice, but also got some blatently assuming, harsh options!

Yeah, its 'only' a rabbit, but I have never seen any response on the goat forum suggest euthanasia unless things were REALLY bad! Even then, it was done in a gentle manner! No wonder I never wanted a bunny...

The goat forum here is the best, I agree! We raise rabbits & I use to frequent the rabbit forum quite a bit until someone corrected all of us that had been calling the kits "popples" &/or any of the rabbits buns & that did it for me. I still check in from time to time but not very much.

Yikes! That was pretty harsh! How is the rabbit doing now? Did you get something for it's eye? I agree with whoever said over there to make sure whatever you put in the eye does not have steroids....usually labeled HC or DEX. I know some people here use neosporin in the eyes..I asked my vet about that and he said no. But some here do it.
I am shocked that you found the rabbit alive. wow. he sounds like a trooper!

I am also very shocked. What would attack a rabbit that little without killing it? My son thinks maybe another rabbit?

He is doing great, and I think really loving the extra attention he's getting right now. Time will tell, but I think since he survived-he has a fighting chance. I dosed the eye first with pnc, now he's getting antibiotic ointment and the chamomile/honey treatment one gal suggested (I am partial to natural remedies).

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that read some of that as drastic! Even DH, who is my realist sounding board when it comes to animal health, wanted me to do what we can to fix him!

And I have to add a little more here: When my friend called me desparately looking for someone to take the little thing, she said it was a girl. When we discovered it was a boy, my husband told her this and she said "Her name is Daisy and I paid good money for her to make sure I had a girl".

Now my friend is not a bunny person, this was her first. Apparently the breeder just wanted to make (or get rid of) a few extra "bucks"?

I had to go read your thread in the rabbit forum & those are some of the exact reason I don't visit there much anymore, comments like pet/professional, etc. some folks actually make you feel bad if you want to help your rabbit & we raise ours for meat so it's not like I'm bringing them in the house but we are humane & EVERYTHING is spoiled here, even the rabbits.

I would get the Terramycin opthamalic ointment if you can find it, it's really good stuff & I try to always have it on hand. I've used it on a rabbit a duck & a baby goat before.

The Tri-Care ointment from TSC in the equine section is great stuff for any wounds, scabs, etc. he has on him but don't use that in the eye.
If you need any more help with your Bunny I'll be happy to help not that I'm an expert on rabbits either but ours have always been healthy & haven't lost 1 yet in 4 or5 years that we didn't intend for the freezer.

Daisy...............LOL,that's hilarious. How is he tonight?Better I hope.I also got my two rabbits(flemish mixes)from a friend who was looking for a good home for them. The doe had lost/killed two litters and was not supposed to be pregnant when I got her.The same night I brought them home she had a litter of 11 and killed/ate all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!Needless to say,she will not be bred again. They will always have humane care, that includes taking them to the vet if necessary and so will my chickens, goats, horse, dogs and cats.I can understand putting something down if it is badly hurt and suffering, but if there is a good chance for recovery, the animal will get that chance.Just my opinion.

I second the Tri-Care. It is amazing. You can also put aloe in the eye. Today works too. I'm glad Bunny is feeling better. We eat our bunnies but I have gone to heroic lengths to save them before. And since when did a HOMESTEADING board cater only to professionals??? Silly rabbit board.

Way back, the goat forum used to be pretty....intense Im not sure the rabbit forum can rival the horse forum though
