Baby Reservation Question
If you reserve a baby from a breeder can you turn it down when you see it? Would that make the breeder not want to let you reserve a baby again?

Depends on the breeder...... Ask them if you're able to turn down a kid & have a second choice.
Some will let you.... Others state deposit is forfeit if buyer changes their mind or backs out & that.deposit is only refundable if the breeder can't fill the order.
Talk to the breeder, and get everything in writing.

Your deposit will probably be forfeit. If the kid is defective or just plain ugly (I am talking conformationally) then a good breeder would offer you the deposit back or let you make another choice. If your reason is a good one, and the breeder won't let you back out (by this I mean give your deposit back because if you don't like the animal you should not complete the transaction - why throw good money after bad?) then why would you care whether or not they will do business with you? You don't want to do business with them - right?!
Note: Changing your mind means forfeiting the deposit.

If you are wanting spotty Nubian kids and would turn down a non-spotty kid, talk to the breeder before making the deposit.

I would talk to the breeder & make sure they know EXACTLY what your looking for & what you want. Also ask if they don't have the right sex, etc. do they give your deposit back.
If your still unsure about giving a deposit to a specif breeder after talking to them about it then I would find another breeder.

My friend has a doe that she reserved years ago whose sire LA'd at 89 as a 3yo and dam scored 88 as a 4yo. She LA'd for the first time last month or so and her doe LA'd as a 5yo with a 78. On paper she looks excellent. On the ground she's a mess.
I'm looking at reserving a buckling. On paper and on the ground the parents are gorgeous. With my buck luck I'd get a 78 scoring buck. It would be an expensive buckling and I'd have to pay for travel from AZ. I saw my friend's mess and now I'm really hesitant. When I saw the breeder at the fair with all of the undershot jaws I became really hesitant too because I was ready to place a deposit on one of her bucklings.

Investing in a new herdsire, a pricey one, and you already have reservations like this?
I'd run far away. Especially given what you've seen in person.
I know someone who paid a pretty penny for a buck.... Pics looked great. Dam was a champion.... Had him shipped here & he has an awful bite & the worst feet I've ever seen on a young animal.... Just a mess....
If this were just a matter of wanting a particular color, it wouldn't be a big deal..... But the faults/price/cruumy LA scores would make me look elsewhere. JMO

Any good breeder should be willing to give a refund or second choice if the kid is born, but has extra teats, bad bite, defect, illness, etc.
If the animal was otherwise fine/healthy, you'd forfeit your deposit if you backed out for whatever reason. If you think it doesn't suit your purposes, well that's not my fault. You should only put money down for kids out of dams/sires that you like, thus your resulting kid shouldn't be of an unexpected quality.

I myself can't reserve an unborn kid with a deposit. I have to physically see it. I want the conformation package of course, but the color and "look" of the kid itself is also extremely important to me.

This. If its not a good kid, I'd refund. If the desired kid is not produced, I'd refund.
If the buyer simply decides they no longer want the kid, after they have said they did, and I worked the rest of my kid orders around it? No refund forthcoming.
Of course, I don't ask for a very large deposit, but still.

Been thinking about this some more(I know the refunding deposits wasn't the original question). In my view, deposits serve two purposes.
1. To assure the breeder the buyer is serious and will come through when the desired kid is born. This allows the breeder to plan accordingly and get on with their lives with some surety of what will happen when kids are born.
2. To assure the buyer that the kid they want will be offered to them, not sold to someone else who offered more money or got there first. This allows them to plan accordingly and get on with their lives with some surety of what will happen when kids are born.
In this light, I think deposits are very important and should be respected. If for some reason the kid is perfectly fine, but not what the buyer wanted exactly, or his/her situation has changed and they can no longer take the kid. I think they should of course be able to back out of the agreement, but *without* their deposit. This will help negate the affect of lost time and finding another buyer for the breeder.
If the desired kid is not born, or is faulty in some way, the breeder should offer a refund and/or moving the deposit to another kid.
Of course there could be exceptions. But as a general rule, that is my opinion on deposits taken and given.
As to the original question:
If you decline to buy a kid once its born, it would probably depend on the individual breeder, if they would decide not to deal with you again.
For me, it would depend on your reason for declining. Some reasons are perfectly understandable. For example, if you had money problem arise after putting the deposit down. Why would I want you to go ahead with a buy, if you might have trouble feeding the boughten kid?? In cases where there was a really good reason, I can't see holding it against you in future dealings.
But thats just my opinion.
