I've got scours.

That's me with scours.... since WEDNESDAY! Now I know why the goats stand in the corner with droopy ears and look miserable. My whole gut hurts.

If this isn't better on Saturday, I'm breaking into my goat meds.

I've tried Imodium, Kaopectate, bananas, and all the traditional stuff. I'm having to work hard not to get dehydrated, but skirting on the edge of it.

I haven't been this sick in thirty years.

You can go the farmer route and try SMZ tabs. My parents use them for everything and DH has for tooth infections.

Sorry you got the scours.

Alice, is it possible that you have been exposed to Giardia? My DH got a case of it that lasted 2 weeks straight, and MAN was he miserable!

The other option is a bad case of coccidia....do you have Baycox on hand? I can't imagine that a 5 day round of Corid would do much for your outlook on life!

Ask Minelson about the taste...

I'd go for the Baycox myself...just sayin' (and absolutely NOT poking fun AT you...just trying to lift your dampened spirits)

I feel for you. Have you tried drinking rice water?

There is also no shame in taking valuable livestock in to the vet.

Maybe time to get a sample into the lab?

Feel better soon so you can eat your jalapeno poppers and ruminate on important topics.

Yes definitely try rice water... You put rice and about 3x the reccommended water in a pot on the stove and cook the rice. Then strain it and slowly sip on the water.

No advice Alice but I sure hope something works soon & you get to feeling better real fast. If it doesn't stop soon you should get to the doctor.

If those haven't worked, you have something serious going on People can get severely dehydrated, too, if you start getting muscle cramps, start worrying about that, too. Hope it clears up, and ditto on the "vet" visit if it doesn't.

Are you running fever?

Hubby got like this.... Then got a raging fever, started hallucinating.... Took him to the ER. They hospitalized him.... Took 3 days to get a clostridium difficile diagnosis.... Then the doc didn't prescribe the proper antibiotic dose/duration..... Made it resistent to 1 of the 2 RX options (the 2nd option after the Flagyl was $1000 a bottle... Killed our savings)..... Got so bad he almost had to have his colon removed. Two near death scares, job loss, 3 doctors & 7 months of misery and he finally kicked it (& lost 90lbs, he lookef skeletal).

So, if you start running fever, go see the doc just in case.

So sorry you feel crummy..... Hopefully it's just a nasty bug that will be over soon. Stay hydrated and take care of yourself! ((hugs))

Oh, my gosh, I hadn't thought about most of those options!! I just figured someone in the 300 people here for my friend's estate auction brought me a virus!!

Corid - ICK!! Maybe Di-Methox, but I *know* Corid is nasty.

I have well water, can Giardia get in wells? I thought it was in streams. ??

Oh lordy, it better not be C. Diff.

Yes, I ran 101.2 the one time I took my temp.

This cannot run two weeks. I have to go to California on Friday. My younger son's new wife always wanted a beach wedding, so they are getting married *again* on Saturday.

I'll do some online research and see how things go today.

I have Scour Halt for piglets. What do you think?

Don't do the Di-methox! It tastes so horrible and you won't be able to get the taste out of your mouth. Nothing you do to it will make it taste any better.
I'm sorry you are so sick Alice. I think you should go to the vet. We use Metro on dogs and I would take that myself if I had scours. Metronidazole (Flagyl) Information from Drugs.com

How about a real doctor and maybe giving them a stool specimen. Cryptosporidium comes to mind with your symptoms. My son had it and we were never able to figure out where he got it from.

The important part is to figure what "it" is that is causing your dysentary so it can be stopped not only with you but whatever the source is so your critters don't get it too!

I sincerely hope you start feeling better very soon.

I lived in Milwaukee when Crypto was found in the water and the whole city and outlying areas got the runs. I never felt really sick but whenever I ate anything it just went right through. Same for hubby and all the people we knew who were affected by it. Eat dinner...head for the bathroom. Eat an apple...head for the bathroom. I think it only lasted about a week.

DH and DS just got over something like that. The hospital said they were giving out IV bags left and right because everyone became so dehydrated so quickly. Make sure you are staying well hydrated. Drink an electrolyte solution. I made my guys Potassium broth Potassium Broth for Rapid Recovery and Rejuvenation . It and homemade chicken broth were the only things they could keep down. Find something liquid and nourishing and sip it all day. A trip to the doctors may be in order.

This is the thing I dislike about this board. We're all so spread out. We need to start a soup brigade.

I hope you feel better soon.

I'm sitting here sipping chicken broth, and I'm going to make beef broth this morning.

Things are marginally better. Of course, there isn't anything solid in my gut to transition out, but hey, not *going* every 30 minutes is nice.

I wish I'd thought to take my temp when I came in from milking, but before I started on this nice hot broth.

You know you are a goat person when you're sick, and you dream you are feeding snacks to the goats over the electric fence, and you get ZAPPED in your dream!!!! I woke up.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I never even heard of rice water before!

Honestly if the Imodium is not working then it isn't your everyday run of the mill scours and you probably should see a real doc.
Suggest some cheese and crackers, milk products I have found help solidify. Stay away from juices they help move stuff through faster and right now thats not what you need. Also canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) tablespoon twice a day has always helped animal's in distress with scours.

Wanted to add if you are drinking juice to help re-hydrate water it down, I like mine with ice.

Alice, I'm so sorry you are feeling bad. Believe it or not...it's STRONG BLACK tea and olive oil doses here for diarrhea. LOL..don't put the olive oil IN the tea. It usually gets us slowed down. I believe it's the tannins in the tea that whoas it.

Again..I hope you feel better soon.
