2nd guessing the vet??

I took my new little buck to the vet today because I noticed he had a runny nose(clear) & seemed a little congested after I picked him up from the breeder.

Well my vet is up north TB testing a couple large herds & won't be home until Wednesday so she suggested I take him to this other vet. I did like this vet she sent me to today, was a young girl, very nice & seemed like she knew what she was talking about.

His fever was 102.4 but she said it did sound more rattly & congested in 1 lung than the other, his eyes are clear, good stools & eating fairly well for only being here 2 days.

She sent me home with Nuflor for today & every other day for 3 doses & Banamine.
I guess I thought Nuflor was to be given everyday & I asked her about that & she said every other day. Well I'm not a vet & thought maybe I should make sure before saying anything else.
I've looked it up & found that some say every other day & some say every day.

So which is it?

I just drove 900 miles round trip to get this little guy so I surely don't want to loose him.

She is right Nuflor is given every other day.
It works very well on the couple of kids I have had over the years with Rattles. It is an IM shot, hopefully she also mentioned that.

If he is for some reason still having a runny nose I get Mucus Relief from Target and give a couple of cc's and that usually takes care of clear snotty noses. New place, new dust, hay and etc can cause it, he is probably just fine and getting use to his new place.

I give Nuflor everyday for three days AND I give it SubQ. It hurts.

I heard an old time (still around though) Nubian breeder say that her vet taught her "Hormones give IM and everything else in goats...SubQ" I haven't found an instance yet that I wouldn't agree with that.

Slightly OT the only exception I have found would be the vaccine Covexin 8 I got lumps one year from the vaccines and everyone said it was from an unsterile shot. I always use clean needles and wipe the area first. So the next year shaved the area and used betadine scrub, nope still got lumps. I even rubbed the areas afterwards like you used to have to do human vaccines. I ended up switching to Calvary 9.

She told me I could give it either SQ or IM so I gave it SQ today.

I noticed the little runny nose & then heard the congestion after we left the breeders house & I was headed home with him so he had it before he left her place. I called her as soon as I got home & she said a couple other folks had called her & mentioned a runny nose to but she figured with the drought, dusty hay, etc. that was common. I thought maybe she could be right & I'd take his temp & just watch him for a day or 2. Well the congestion wasn't clearing up & I thought I'd better take him in to be sure. I knew I couldn't get Nuflor with out the vet seeing him.

Is the mucus relief for babies or in the baby section or by the cold medicines?

The vet said 1 book she looked in that she trusted said every other day & the website she had read it on said everyday & I have also read it both ways too.

I trust so many of you folks here about goat things but counting the vet that's 2 for every other day so I will probably give it that way. How long will it take for the congestion to clear up?
Sorry such dumb questions but so far I've been lucky enough not to every have had a goat get Pneumonia before.

Every other day for Rattles, and for kids with other problems.

If it is a REALLY serious issue, if you are looking at a downed goat and staring death in the face, yes, every day. But unless it is that serious, every other day is best.

Don't forget to get some probiotics down him. Nuflor is strong, and will kill off his gut flora.

You should see improvement no later than tomorrow evening. If there is no improvement, back to the vet with him on Monday.

Hope this helps!

When I first brought our new buck home he had snotty nose for several days. A few days Vet Rx but he wasnt running temp or rattles either.
The trip was only about an hour.
But I think the cure was merely telling the breeder about it.

Thanks for the reminder of Probios which I have but don't rarely ever give antibiotics.
I'll start giving him a glob of the paste daily starting tonight.

Every day for three days, no skimping once your started and no skipping days. Only time I ever lost a goat with pnuemonia was when I went with the second vets advice and skipped days. I went back to my original vets advice of every day for Nuflor and never lost another.
So.....I wouldn't skip days. But thats up to you.

So everyday for 3 days Emily? She gave me 3 doses or does he need it for more days?
I'm so glad you all are here to help me but it is confusing. So glad & very blessed I don't have a sick goat too often.

I think I'll go with the 3 days in a row then & if I need more I'll call the office on Monday.
The Onion Creek Ranch (Goat medications) Link also says for goats to give daily for a maximum of 5 days.

Yes, my vet advised me years ago that it was three days in a row, no skimping even if the goat looks perfectly fine on day two. Just three days has always done it for me, I've never had to give another dose.
Make sure you give the Banamine every day too. Both can be given SQ, and you can even use the same syringe. They now sell a banamine/nuflor combo that I use for calves on occasion. But I still go individual with goats.

Thanks everyone, she said he wasn't really bad yet so I hope he's better by the end of this.

Oh & I started him on the Replamin Gel with the other goats this week when it was time for their weekly dose. Not that his coat looks bad or anything, it's silky soft but might as well get him right in the routine.

Good! Be sure to give him the supportives. Probios which has already been mentioned(or yogurt with active culture, I like that), vitamin B and vitamin C.

For anyone who cannot get the vitamin C in injectable(I LOVE THIS STUFF AND MY VET FOR CARRYING IT!!), you can go online and get bulk ascorbic acid(vitamin C) in powder form. I keep this on hand even if I have the injectable form. Sometimes you just need a whole heck of a lot more than the tablets from the pharmacy provide.

Best place to buy that I've found for bulk ascorbic acid(do not confuse with citric acid), is ameriherb.com

I have regular Probios paste but I also have Probiotic Plus paste which I'm going to give him that has Vit.A, D, B12, E, Niacin & Vitamin C so I figure that will be better for him.

Every 24 hours.

Goats have a much higher metabolism than cows.

A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...we had a young Boer doe get pneumonia and our vet had us give Nuflor every 24 hours - she would be doing great, and at about 24-30 hours, would go downhill again. After 3 days of this, we called a few goat folks who said, "oh no, every 24 hours". Once we did that, the doe recovered. Unfortunately, the doe was stunted, so 6 months later, we ate her.

Truly, every 24 hours, and banamine to reduce the inflammation to her lungs.
